Speed Sign Recognition

2023 F-150, XLT: Sometimes I see the speed sign on the dash and sometimes there is nothing. I pulled up the owners manual to adjust the tolerance and it gives the following instructions:
1. Press FEATURES on the touchsceen
2. Press DRIVER ASSISTANCE
3. Press SPEED LIMIT ASSIST (I do not have this menu and can't go further...how do I turn on?)
4. Press TOLERANCE
5. Use slider bar to select the required level

I see it sometimes on my 21 XLT and I think it runs off Ford built in navigation. If I use AA, I get a speed sign all the time. Only thing I wish AA would do is show the speed sign on the IPC rather than the sync screen.

The menu I believe you're looking at is to set a tolerance of what speed the truck will set itself while using cruise control, not a tolerance or sensitivity for reading actuator signs. If that makes sense and I'm understanding your question.

For example, I think if I pull that menu up on my truck I will see this setting as +5 mph or something. If I'm driving with cruise control on in a 45mph speed zone and the cruise control is set to 50, if the road changes to 55mph snd the truck recognizes the change, it will automatically set itself to 60mph.

Here's what my 2022 manual says. I think my Ford nav subscription ended today and my truck does pretty good at reading signs so if I remember I'll follow up tomorrow if I notice any difference.

I don’t have the adaptive cruise control…just trying to get the speed signs to display on the control panel or sync screen all the time instead of intermittently…

I don't have adaptive cruise control and my truck shows the speed sign even when the cruise has not been turned on. I lose the sign going through yields from one road to another. City streets are a 50/50 deal and some back roads don't show up.

Hi @EdJ, there's two different things going on here:

1. The "speed limit assistance" is basically an over speed warning. If the system can be enabled (which you say isn't possible yet) then what happens for example is when a 60mph speed sign is recognised, and tolerance is set to 2mph, then if you hit 63mph, a warning will come up. That is those two feature's only function. This function can be enabled using FORScan to modify the configuration of the IPC, IPMA and APIM modules.

2. The issue of speed signs disappearing: if you have inbuilt navigation, map data will also be used to display speed limits. It works this way: when a speed sign is seen by the windscreen camera, that is "honoured" by the system and will show on the cluster (IPC) but only for a period of time. Unless another speed sign is seen, it will revert to map data for speed zones. If there is no speed zone map data for where you are currently driving, the speed sign on the cluster will disappear until either:
a. Another speed sign is seen by the windscreen camera or
b. Another speed zone exists in map data as you are travelling along.

There is a configuration change in the IPMA that can be used to ignore map data speed zones, but doing so on a truck equipped with forward radar will cause pre-collision assist errors, disabling it. If you don't have a forward radar, that might be worth trying, but my bet would be that it will not result in the speed sign staying there until the next one is seen by the windscreen camera.

What will happen is my current state of operation. Without the connected services subscription, your truck will operate from the windscreen camera (primary) and any speed zone data in the locally stored maps in the APIM. It is great fun when the inbuilt map has a roadworks speed zone which is actually no longer there. If the camera-detected sign has timed out and you're happily cruising at 60mph with your adaptive cruise control, you hit the "outdated" roadworks speed and on go the anchors! Ask me how I know ?

Yeah I have a couple spots on a 55mph road on my daily commute where my truck will decide to change the speed limit from 55 to 25 or 35. No speed limit signs in sight and wants to slam on the brakes. I just cancel cruise control when I come up to those two spots

Not to hijack but where I drive on a regular basis, the dash displays an incorrect speed limit. I wish I could just turn it off completely.

I've come to the conclusion that sometimes it picks up speed limit signs for lanes next to the freeway, or even adjacent streets. (I assume that it's the same system as on a 25 Maverick Lariat [sync 4]).

Can be done with FORScan if you have it or are near someone who does ?
