SmartCap Installed on 2023 F-150

So we became a SmartCap dealer last week and of course we had to outfit our own truck. If you are local to our Lindenhurst, NY store we can hook you up with one. At this time we DO NOT ship SmartCap (too expensive, and we focus locally on these).

HOWEVER if you are a SmartCap owner and want to outfit your cap with a similar cross-bar setup let me know. We DO ship Rhino-Rack products around. We can also set you up with a bed cover or roof rack (which we DO ship).

Shown here is over the course of two days. Day 1 we took it out to the beach. Day 2 we installed the Rhino-Rack Reconn Bar system on the top. Bolts right in, no drilling and gives us a set of really nice cross bars that have integrated t-slots on the front/back/top side/bottom side.

And yes, if you have a keen eye, we know that the 3-piece roof isn't sitting 100% level. We're working on fixing that. We were running out of time during this first install and wanted to get it on.

Years ago I was looking at smart cap but I never could see one to find out about having it painted. I was hoping you could remove the glass windows and gaskets and take the shell to a paint shop to have it color matched to the truck. This would give you the black glass windows to match the F-150 and have the shell match the truck. In my case Atlas Blue Metalic. I ended up going with an ARE Topper but would have liked the Smart Cap.

Can you tell if this is possible or not. I like the look of the color matched with the black windows like this.

Sure you could paint it before installing it. I'd recommend you do that prior to installation since it's a modular kit that you put together (it has 5 pieces for the most part). The windows were installed so they can certainly be removed to aid in that.

It's made out of stainless steel not fiberglass so it's a bit easier to move around for painting purposes.

I always thought you would eventually see some distributer or authorized dealer, hook up with a local paint shop to offer this. I think it could be a big selling point for the smart cap.

Over the years though, I have not seen one instance of this being done. This led me to think that there may be hurdles with extra disassembly for painting that are not easily overcome. I know you assemble it initially, so there should be a way, but no one has tried. Pity really as the "you can get it in any color as long as its black" is somewhat of a limiting factor.

I hear you on the mismatched paint but ultimately it became a positive for me. The reason being when it is time to sell the truck I will probably sell the topper separately and the fact that they are all black means that anyone with a '21+ 6.5' bed could buy it rather than someone with the same paint color. An even bigger benefit since my truck is a discontinued color - Leadfoot.

Could you post a video of the automatic tailgate working with the Smartcap? Something is off with mine and really hard to shut the tailgate.
