That’s interesting….mine is a 2023 Lariat and it shifts into 4A on slippery. But when selecting normal or shutting the truck off and on, it stays in 4Auto. Wish it wouldn’t.
Mine does this. The only thing different is it WILL shift back to 2H so long as you are still moving and you go back to Normal.

I wonder if this can be changed in Forscan. I suspect not but will take a look this evening.

I am late to the event
My truck is in 4A 99% of the time
It's as close to awd as you can get without a sticker saying awd
If I shift to slippery, which I have used many times ,
It shifts to that mode and 4A stays lite
If I select normal..it will stay in 4A.

If equipped the 4A is the default for slippery, sport, not sure about the rest

If i select normal from sport it will go into 2H, unless I select 4A by pressing the button

Eco also drops it by default to 2H,
But I select 4A and it stays there, until I turn off truck and restart and It inquires to stay in eco, and will go back to 2H if I press yes

Eco select for me is long long road trips...and 2h if conditions are ideal,
Clear, unlimited visibility
In trucks with the 4A transfer case, the front gear is engaged from wheels to the input shift at the transfer case all the time anyway
Because we dont have the IWE that unlock or lock .they are 100% locked all the time.
So 4A just engages that last bit to be synchronized with the rest of transfer case

My 2023 STX goes into 4H in slippery and back to 2H when I go to normal. The funniest thing is it locks the rear axle automatically as soon as I go to deep snow mode. Anyone who lives in the NorthEast knows the locker is NOT your friend in ice or snow unless stuck or heading in a straight line :)

I just used slippery mode 2 days ago in the snow. When I shifted back to normal it went back to 2H. I have a XL STX.

What is the difference in using the different modes rather than just selecting 4x4 when you need it? I have never understood the modes at all.

Some of the modes will affect the transmission shifting tables so you get improved traction and performance suitable for the driving conditions you are in.

This all correct. Just want to mention not only the transmission but the engine/brakes mapping are also changed with some modes. Basically any chassis control ECU (or maybe body ones to give sport noises in the speaker :D) "tuning" can be changed, all up the Ford engineers to decide.

The ECU suppliers must implement anything Ford comes up with. Like increasing engine brake in tow mode (engine ECU) or allowing more wheel slip in snow mode (brake ECU), and whatnots. All part of the requirements received from Ford engineering

For 4 Auto capable trucks, it also impacts how that functions. For example, 4A in slippery mode almost never cuts power from the front wheels, even sending some power up front when taking sharp turns. Normal 4A is more eager to drive just the rear axle.

And if you select the screen that indicates drivetrain.you csn see a depiction of power sent to front wheels in 4A..
It's AWD...wink wink. it sends power forward all day long.
Especially when you press the dun pedal
