I used a product called Corroseal. It’s a rust converter and it leaves a protective coat. I think it can be painted after. It worked great on the rear differential & axle surface rust. I just painted it on with a brush and touched up any other spots I could find while I was under there. It’s available on Amazon. It’s pricey but goes a long way I still have a bunch left over from the gallon . I’ve used the liquid version of Krudkutter before for other projects and it was great too!
