Rear Axle Half Shaft retaining bolt

Guess what part this? Or better yet where did it come from? While having my tires rotated today, the tech came and got me to show me something. I thought oh shit what is wrong now? Took me back to the rear right side and showed me this Hugh ass washer and bolt that looks it was sheared off and stating it was in the wheel when the removed the tire and fell out. So can anybody tell me where it came from? I will taking the vehicle in the morning to Ford to see what they have to say.

It's the Rear Axle Half Shaft retaining bolt.
It is a known problem for the 9.75" HD axles.

Well called ford and its not a safety issue and I can still drive it. But they will fix both sides when they get the parts in and they dont know how long that will be.

well called back and said not to drive it. they will come and pick it up with a loaner. they do not know when they will have the parts in though.

Do u know your truck production date? There are a lot of folks myself included who are hoping ford fixed the major issue by April 2022. Data compiled by a forum member indicates majority of issues were before April.

Btw if u don't what to do some afternoon, there is about 100 page forum thread just on this issue!

Just FYI here's a fairly recent update of the summary from the long thread linked on the other forum.

Yep, only 3 out of 124 reported initial failures are on builds after April 2022. IMO that's a strong case for the notion that the problem, whatever it's root cause, was resolved after that build month.

A few outliers / anomalies after that date and yes new reports continue to trickle in as the earlier builds accumulate miles.

Mine is in the shop now waiting for the half shafts to arrive. I suggest you talk to the dealer parts department to see if they have them in stock. Chances are not, but it would avoid waiting. I could have taken my truck home and waited but it was only two days so I left it with the dealer.

I have a September 21 build and both of my half shafts were replaced under the customer satisfaction program. They were not broken. Only took a few days to get parts.

Same for me. I spoke with the service writer when I picked the truck up, and he said they have only done two trucks so far, my 2021 and a 2023. He had to call ford to get approval for the 2023.

Unfortunately you are in the high risk period - the good news is that Ford has the fix and warranties it. We had thought parts supply chain as not longer an issue but appears you dealer is experiencing issues. Really sorry u are going thru this but as you can see by the posted thread above you are not alone.

I have June build and though outside the high risk period continually check to see if I have become the latest statistic.
