So long story short while on a road trip exploring remote backroads a rock put a fair size hole in my rear right, took to a tire shop unable to repair. My spare is full size matching (all 5 tires are 285/70R17 KO2s). The spare had no miles on it, my other 4 have close to 40,000km on them. The used tires clearly have less tread depth compared to the new one, have not had a chance to measure them accurately yet.
I’ve seen conflicting info online, my question is is it okay to run tires with varying tread depths as long as they’re the same/similar on each axle? Some sources say any AWD/4WD vehicle needs all 4 to be the same for tire circumference to be equal. Would any issues result from engaging 4wd with different tread depth (tire circumference) between front/rear axles? Ideally trying to avoid having to buy a whole new set of tires.
