Oil level takes a long time to settle in pan?

So first oil change on my new to me 22 F150 with the 5.0. It seems when I’m checking the oil level it takes hours to get a good read off the dipstick. You get oil down the length of the dipstick.

This is the first 5.0 I’ve owned so bear with me,

Seen that on my Powerboost (3.5L). What I think is the casue is there is a windage tray above the oil pan. These are commonly on race type engines but can contribute to better mileage on every day vehicles. Most did not have these until recently. But I infer that this keeps the oil level from quickly settling. Also I tried to use a liquid extractor last time I changed oil. I could not pull more than 2 qts out of the pan via the distick hole. I could not get the tube far enough down into the oil pan. So, there you have it: I ran into the windage tray... And I think that's your culprit.

My Cummins isc 8.3 states wait at least an hour after running to check oil.
So now I do that on everything
Or the next morning.

I generally have a Saturday tradition to check vehicle fluids with morning coffee.

Take it to the dealer, have them rotate the tires while you're at it. For the first time in my life, I'm not changing my own oil and I must say it feels great to never touch a dipstick.

Manual says to use the lowest spot front or back of the stick after 15 min on level ground as the mark. I think it also saying to not fill if in the hatching. Only when it falls below it.

other manufacturers usually have 30min

I would let the dealer change it but that is not much different than the oil change stores. Frontline mechanics are not changing oil. It is usually the grunts. They don't grease the rubber gasket, then torque it to 75 ft/lbs. They quit two weeks later because "they work too hard".

I know this is old, but the trick is to simply remove the dipstick for about five minutes. Wipe it clean answer it you won’t have the smear.
