5.0L V8 Oil Change Procedure

I have always done the maintenance on my vehicles but my last truck was a 2010 base model with no tech.
I now have a 2022 302A 5.0L 4x4 with more tech than a space shuttle and i have been concerned about missing something in what used to be a simple oil change. I have read the owners manual and know the oil spec (SAE 5W-30, WSS-M2C961-A1), capacity (7.75 qts), and filter type (SAE/USCAR-36). But there is a lot of details missing. I didn't find much in the search for this specific topic, but if i missed something please link me to the thread.

Does anyone have the maintenance manual section for the 5.0 oil change procedure and/or have any recommendations for a detailed step by step Youtube video?
What is the torque (ft-lb) requirement for the oil pan drain bolt?
What are the socket sizes?
What else do i need to know that i am not thinking about?


I have a 15 qt oil catch pan.
Will Reset the Intelligent Oil Life Monitor.
I plan to refill with Mobil 1 Extended Performance High Mileage Full Synthetic Motor Oil 5W-30
FRAM Ultra Synthetic Automotive Replacement Oil Filter, XG10575

Oil drain plug is a 15 mm

If you don’t have an oil filter removal tool. Take your filter to the parts store and get one of the socket type filter tools that fits your filter.

Early is no need to torque the oil drain plug. Tighten it down by hand. Put a 3/8 ratchet on it and give it about a 1/8th of a turn. You don’t need anything else. It just needs to be hand tight and then snug it up.

As mentioned find an oil filter socket that fits the FL-500s or what ever your favorite oil filter is. I stick with Motorcraft stuff. I also only fill 7.5 quarts. That way I have 1/2 quart for the next oil change. The dip stick always reads perfect. I change mine every 5000 miles. If the truck is on level ground or on a slight angle upward, the oil filter will drain out the back end of the factory drain canal thing. If your slightly downward, then the oil will drain out the front of the drain canal thingy.

All of the above information sounds good. Mobil-1 and the Motorcraft oil filter (FL-500S). Personally, I only put 7 quarts of oil in and that seems to put me just under the full line on the dipstick. Good luck!

The oil drain plug bolt has an embedded rubber washer. I haven’t read anything about if or when to replace it.

There are mixed opinions whether to lubricant the new oil filter gasket before installing it. The FSM says don’t do it vs. my 50+ years of doing it without issue, just don’t over tighten it.

Thanks. I typically lubricate the oil filter seal also and do about a 1/2 turn past the seat. Hopefully, that's not too tight for this truck.
