I would say that there was some type of chemical on there or you parked near a place that had a strong reflection from the sun.

No chemicals and it has just been sitting outside my house on a concrete apron.

Other mirror is fine.

Also, I understand reflections can heat things up but a) c'mon Ford this is a truck and b) I live in eastern WA not AZ or NV.

It shows the view to the rear, not the view to the side.

If the "rear view mirror" was labelled based on its location, it would be the center mirror, instead of the side view.

So there are three rear-view mirrors (that show views to the rear), two located at the side, one interior. You're welcome.

Lol it literally does show the view to the sides.
And that's what Ford calls it, too.

I wonder if the sun hit a window on your house/garage and reflected back on the truck with a concentrated beam like a magnifying glass.

There's not a lot of glass on our garage doors, one pane up high.

But surely someone has parked an F-150 somewhere where there are reflections from the sun before?

Not reflections per se, rather sometimes a reflection can be focused, similar to light through a magnifying glass as mentioned above.. Not saying that's what happen here though. Perhaps it's possible it happened elsewhere and you just noticed it?

Our highest temp in November was 59. I doubt there's been enough solar energy here to heat anything that much, even with a reflection, in months.

But think of the number of F-150s out there, parked a bunch of different hotter and brighter places at all different angles in front of office buildings with glass. Seems like this would be a common thing if it is going to happen.

I found two threads on FordTrucks.com --- Ford denying claims etc. Look if I live in Alburqueue and it was August, I'd believe it. My truck sits outside my garage 99% of the time (or at the fire station) and there's no panes of glass nearby. Because this mirror sits on the north side, there's no way light could reflect to it at all from any angle -- unless it somehow went through the car. There's a 200ft ridge to the north as well. There's definitely no light on that side of the car. Passenger side I could maybe believe it.

I'll ask the dealer about it next time I am there. It was in with them for an hour or so for the 20k service and oil change a few weeks ago. Maybe someone left a curling iron on it.

It looks like it's just the cap, and not the body of the mirror, which is easy and relatively inexpensive to replace. I had to replace mine and used Ford Points to buy a replacement.
