So, that's about 1.5oz (noting J&L says the capacity is 3 oz)?

Personally, it's hard for me to get concerned or 'unnerved' about ~1/2oz per 1000 miles, especially with PFDI.

That’s actually a little unnerving.
It's only been designed into every engine that's gone several hundred thousand miles since PCV systems were implemented in the 60's. Definitely a non-issue since port-injected, too.

Any of you end up running a dual catch can setup? I was curious if that would be worth it, or if just running the typical PCV setup would be sufficient.

I'd like to avoid the $400+ options out there.....so if someone has an option that has worked well, I'd love to hear about it.

If I went dual catch can, it would be the ford permanence unit..and it’s like $400. If I can sell this afe cold air intake locally, I might use the funds for one.

Nope……..there are several different reasons or need for an oil separator. The benefits of one are compounded with a boosted engine.

Have a link to where you found it for that price? I was only seeing $500+.

I would not say they do not have benefits, in the same way as a bypass oil filter setup would. The issue I take is that everyone seems like this "gunk" is exclusive to this motor, and then pushes an almost religious need for it, like your engine WILL FAIL if this is not implemented.

My point still stands that many vehicles have gone many hundreds of thousands of miles without one, and many likely still have other vehicles in their fleet that they don't even bother addressing.

Good oil and a good OCI will go a long way.

Keep in mind that previous design engines, with carburetors, Throttle body injection, or port injection continually cleaned the intake valves. Only with gasoline direct injection did the issue of gunking up the intake valves become significant. So significant as to cause Ford to redesign the engines to include both port and direct injection. Thus any engine without direct injection simply had no reason to be overly concerned with PCV and catch cans. Of course a catch can in those engines did help lifetime on an engine that was going to go a few hundred thousand anyway. Never thought about it on my 92 Suburban and it went 30 years... My collection of gunky fluids in the catch can since install not quite a year ago is on the order of a bit over half a gallon of "stuff."

Clean oil and a good OCI certainly helps to remove engine contaminants. Add an oil separator & you’re able to remove even more contaminants.

I know some believe that a well separators unnecessary in a modern engine. I believe there are a few reasons to add one. Those have been discussed already. My biggest reason is short trips. I’m semi retired, I no longer have a 40 minute commute to work.

A side benefit I've noticed is that, at least in warm weather, you have an idea of piston ring blowby. Specifically, in warmer weather, the only thing I see in the bottom of the catchcan is oil. Typically I see maybe 1/8" over several thousand miles and there is no noticeable change in dipstick level at the same time.
