Tested my battery yesterday to see where it stood charge wise. It came up 12.2 and according to an AGM chart I found, that indicates that it has about 50% charge. I just got a Pro Logix charger because I want to embark on updates.

The battery is an OEM H6 and the label indicates that it was installed/built in 8/23.

Questions:

1.) Should I go ahead and replace with an H8, charge and see if updates come in on their own;

2.) Is it reasonable to believe that if the chart is correct and this battery is at 50%, it needs to be replaced?;

3.) Should I just spend time charging the old one and see what happens?

Thanks

No, you’re most likely not gonna get any updates with 12.2v.

charging it overnight certainly cannot hurt. However only time will tell. If you can’t load test it it’s hard to really determine the overall condition of the battery.

Definitely worth upgrading to an H7 or even H8 battery for the extra reserve time. Just be sure to reset the BMS if you do upgrade.

Other things like going into the BCM with Forscan and upping the Battery SOC form Ford's default 80% to 95-100% will also make a big impact on receiving updates. The reason is AGM batteries perform far better for longer when they are maintained at 90% or higher SOC. Also worth picking up a Noco Genius 5 or 10 charger/maintainer and letting it maintain the battery SOC if not being driven regularly or for less than 20-30 min a day. The modules will quickly suck the reserve charge down on the H6 battery forcing deep sleep mode after even 1-2 days of not driving it.

I just discovered something, if the following data is correct, my as built data has a default value for an H7 battery, but I have an H6 installed!

726-04-01:
H6 battery: XXXX-1C1C-XXXX
H7 battery: XXXX-1E1E-XXXX
H8 battery: XXXX-2020-XXXX

If you mean FDRS updates, then first charge the battery overnight. You’ll need to have it (or any battery you install) on a 20A power supply (not just a charger) for FDRS updates.

Put the negative cable of your charger/power supply on the opposite side of the BMS sensor from the battery (e.g. connect it to the end of the ~ 1’ long black cable coming off the negative post, where it attaches to the chassis). Then your BMS will register the charge and current flow and not cause inadvertent halts in your FDRS programming. Most of the TSBs that have to do with module updates in FDRS tell the Ford techs that the battery needs to be above 50%. If not above 50%, it has them reset the BMS on the old battery and retest. If that doesn’t get it up above 50%, it has them replace the bad battery. Powerboost max size size is H7. Other Gen14
non-powerboost can take as big as H8 (Your existing battery blanket won’t fit an H8).

Thanks, there is no blanket. From the Oasis report I have on this vehicle, the dealer swapped the battery out and I assume replaced it with an H6, possibly because no others were available back during pandemic.

Just got back from Wally Mart. Bought a new H7 AGM. I bought the H7 because that is what my truck is programmed for. Yes I could have changed the settings with Forscan, but the difference in the 2 , H7 vs H8, was minimal IMO.

On the charger now and I intend to install in the morning and reset the BMO. When I first got this truck, I was getting random errors that I believe was due to the battery. The battery being replaced was installed at a dealer in 8/23 and is an H6 Motorcraft. Ive also noticed this last week that my truck must be going into deep sleep since when I open the doors, the displays are randomly coming on.

Hopefully too, maybe I will get some OTA stuff!
