Sadly I report my 2022 XLT started doing it at 8000 miles too. Yet, if I cycle 4WD, I get a clunk and it goes away For awhile. Then 4wd engages flawlessly for awhile. If I hear the noise it clunks on 4WD engagement the first time and the noise goes away. (Does not sound like the video above) For awhile.
It seemed to start with the cold weather. So far I’d say stop the noise by changing drive mode asap and keep driving. it will fail or clear up. I’m gonna change gear oil and see what I get.
Mine also became noticeable with colder weather.

So talked to the head tech at dealer today they weren’t able too replicate again but they are going to stick a whole new assembly on the drivers side (where the sound seems to be coming from). The reason it’s the whole new assembly is because they can’t just replace individually pieces for the front locking hubs

Hopefully that does the trick!

Got my truck back but we just got a big snowstorm so truck will be sitting next week while I'm in wyoming snowmobiling. Didn't experience the sound on my 10 mile drive home but thats what sucks about this issue i probably only drive the thing a couple times a month so the rare event I do have the Hum happen its hard to recreate it

I had the same issue happened to me twice this morning. Cold, about 28 degrees, making a slight right hand turn coming out of a traffic circle, I heard the grinding/rumble strip like sound. Then it went away after about 20 seconds or so.

I couldn't make it happen intentionally. Cycling through 4WD had no effect. I feel like this is going to be one of those issues where the dealer can't duplicate it.

Exact same issue here. So strange how it never can be duplicated and only happens randomly

So Guys 600+ miles later after having the front drivers side IWF replaced I can happily say I havent had it happen since ( knock on wood) I live in fridged minnesota and it happened on cold intial drives. So I wouldn't be opposed to maybe asking your techs about it.

With the electric IWE, I'm not convinced that temperature is it's vulnerability. It's an electric stepper motor. I'm guessing a design and quality control element more than anything else.

Entering the 3rd year of production, the E-IWE already has a extremely low trouble-post-count compared to the traditional vacuum IWE.

Hi Guys, I haven't been on the forum for quite awhile but I came on today looking to see if anyone else has had this issue. My '21 started making the same noise from the left front in November when the weather started getting colder. Usually it happens 4-5 times on my way to work, worse when turning right but mine does it at a much lower speed....20-25 km/h. I have had it into the dealer twice for this issue and of course they cannot recreate the sound. On a side note the stupid transmission diaper got half ripped off during our first real snowfall of the year and when I was under the truck I noticed the crossmember close to the front diff looked a little wet, sure enough it looks like the pinion seal on my front diff is leaking.

I am pretty convinced it is an IWE causing the grinding, oddly enough out of 4 f150's this is my first IWE issue and these new versions are supposed to be better ?‍♂

Hopefully with the leaking pinion seal leaking, they dive into it and get that noise taken care of also!

There have been a few front diff with hairline cracks in the case reported on this site in the last couple months. Check there also. That might be the source of noise also.
I havnt seen any pinion seal leaks reported.

I’ll put it ramps tomorrow and try to get some pictures. At the very least I can show them to the dealer so they don’t think I’m crazy. Thanks for the heads up on the cracking.

What you describe is the exact symptom of an IWE that is partially engaged when it shouldn't be. (in 2WD, the IWE should not be engaged. In 4WD it is, thus the grinding of a partial engagement ceases)

This should be rare on a Gen14 truck because Ford finally replaced the vacuum operated IWE with an electric IWE. Or in my 2022 Powerboost, eliminated the IWE altogether.
How do they eliminate the IWE in the power boost?
