Popping back in here with an update. My IWE has arrived at the dealership and I'm scheduled to have it replaced on 3/7. I haven't heard the noise in awhile so I decided to try and reproduce it by shifting from 4H to 2H. Sure enough, there it was on the second try.

I am noticing a similar issue as many of you posted, however I am noticing it more when I am slowing down and hit about 20-25 mph. To me it sounded like something rubbing on the side of my tire but that was obviously not the case. It does seem to be worse for a short time in the morning. I was even watching my transmission temps thinking it was something in the tranny considering I didn't notice it after it warmed up. I have not messed with switching back and forth between 2h and 4h since I notice it when I am slowing down more than anything.
Anybody else notice it while slowing down (starting at about 25 mph)?

The description of something rubbing on the tire is very accurate… My noise was always above 30 mph… I tried the 4 to 2wd method a few times and I can’t seem to be able to replicate it anymore

Hey there. I can look into your F-150’s noise concerns on my end if you’d like. Will you send us a private message with your VIN and dealership info?

So my IWE was replaced on 3/7. I wasn't at the dealership even two hours when the writer came out and said that everything was done but the noise was still there. They ordered a wheel bearing for that side and replaced that the next day and reported all is good, the noise is gone. I picked it up the following morning and sure enough, while getting on the on-ramp to the highway I heard the humming and it lasted longer than I've ever heard it last. The temp outside was 28F and the on-ramp is about two miles from the dealership and a big right hand sweep. I got closer to home and did some 4H to 2H tests to reproduce it and it's as present as it was when the truck was new. I've got about 2300 miles on the truck and with the original IWE I could no longer hear the noise unless I tried to reproduce it shifting from 4H to 2H (as reported on 2/21). It wouldn't do it every time, but I could still reproduce it. Now with the new IWE and wheel bearing, 4H to 2H will reproduce it consistently. I'm starting to wonder if this is just something that needs to "wear in".

My theory on why they did not hear the noise after replacing the wheel bearing is that the truck spent more time in the warm garage and when it was time to road test it, the truck thought it was above 32F so it didn't lock the hubs. I'm guessing they didn't try the 4H to 2H test to reproduce the noise.

At this point, I'm hesitant on bringing this back to the dealership for them to troubleshoot because I don't know what else could be replaced to address the issue (CV shaft?). The original IWE seemed to resolve on its own (mostly) so maybe this one will too and this noise is just part of break-in. I suppose if it gets really bad or something else sounds like it's failing I'll bring it back in. For now I plan to monitor it and if it behaves like the original with a reduction in volume and duration over time, I'll just let it ride.

Ford Motor Company Official,

Is there a way to keep IWEs disengaged regardless of temperature through a TSB? I have the issue as well on my 2022 XLT with only 300 miles and don't think a trip to the dealer will fix it to adequately presently. I'm a little worried about permanent damage to the IWE. It's very frequently below 20 degrees here in Colorado. I have experienced the issue on three occasions within the first 2-3 miles of a trip in sub 30 degree weather and usually when coasting. I'll take it back to the dealer when the headlight recall is ready. The dealer is about an hour away, so this can't become an experiment.

I guess it makes sense that the IWE stays engaged to warm the fluid similarly to the last gen units.

Same reproducible humming / bad wheel bearing type noise on my brand new PB. Engaging / disengaging 4x4 at a standstill and then driving makes the noise. Then engaging / disengaging again while driving makes it stop. Tech heard it and I’m getting a replacement IWE on Thursday. I hope it will solve this issue as well as the grinding in the gas pedal I’ve felt over the past week independent of the grinding noise. I’ll keep y’all posted.
Anyone else had luck?

Does anyone know if this damages anything? Mine did it 2 days in a row with temp below 32 degrees. Both started about 5 miles into my drive. The first day I drove longer with the hum. Stopped went to 4H then back to 2H while in park. Drove and about 15 seconds later the hum stopped. 2nd day once I heard the hum did same thing drove and about 15 seconds again and hum went away again. Both days on the way home when it was warmer no problems.

I guess we will find out! If any major-ish repairs (or ones impacting drivetrain or drivability) are needed within a break in period, it sure would be reassuring gesture to be offered a highly subsidized and/or complimentary extended warranty as a means of allaying any concerns about longevity and demonstrating confidence in the brand ? and really, an extended warranty would just bump us up to what people have been getting on Korean cars for over 20 years.

I just realized that the software upgrade happened a few days ago. Before that I had no problems and I went to work a few days below freezing with no problems. I wonder if the new upgrade changed something. Because since then the problem started. I drove to work today and it was 48 degrees and everything was fine. I put it In 4wd and it worked with no hum. I put it back In 2wd and everything was good. Just a thought.

I got the latest OTA update and temps are rising. Today was the first time above 35F since owning this truck and it drove totally smoothly… barely imperceptible vibration / grinding in the gas pedal, if at all. So, temps absolutely do affect this issue. Hoping that the IWE fix on Thursday or whatever else they do can fix this once and for all. Is that wishful thinking?

So glad I found this. I had mentioned this to my Ford Dealer and they gave me the tire rubbing thing as I got new tires put on

when I’m turning right I get that rubbing sound. When I’m backing up. It’s louder.
I don’t see that concern anywhere on this thread. Please don’t let me be the only one

I am having a recall wiper motor done. So I’m going to mention this thread.

IWE. What does it stand for?
Thanks everyone.

IWE is Integrated Wheel End. It is what locks your hubs so you have 4x4. If they don't engage the you will just be 2WD.
