I had the steering wheel on my 2021 KR replaced under warranty today. My truck has 35k miles and the leather on top of the wheel was peeling. This work order showed a cost of $1592 to replace a steaming wheel. WOW

That does seem excessive but how much of that is labor? And I wonder what is billed as warranty (Ford is paying for it) vs. what it would be if you were paying for it.

That does seems crazy as the wheel itself is only around $160.

My father in laws 2020 King Ranch had exactly the same thing happen around 20K miles. Apparently they didn't change the steering wheel material between generations.

We had a similar issue with a BMW under warranty probably 10 years ago. Dealer tried to tell me normal wear and tear and I had to escalate it to the regional guys. Needless to say, we didn’t buy another BMW after that.

Glad that Ford covered it without making a big deal.

My Lariat has had abrasion marks in a couple of places since day 1. Of course, they are right where I put my hands, so it drives me crazy. Ford refuses to replace it.

Of course, I didn't notice it until day 3 of taking it home... refusing to buy the truck was not an option.

I think the reason for Ford not fighting the KingRanch wheel issue is that they were forced to acknowledge, at some point, they got a bad batch. Could be one of several suppliers?

And I wouldn't be surprised if part of the warranty cost is the burden of that supplier.

Well the lariat heated wheels can be bought for $160. I think the KR wheel is more than double that. Plus, if it’s got active steering, it’ll be even more.

@BMWtoF150 what all was replaced? Just the wheel? Do you have active steering? What are the labor rates in your area?

Any chance you care to share the invoice?

The service rep showed me memo from Ford that certain steering peeling issues would be covered under warranty. They do not argue about mine, just replaced it.

Does it have adaptive steering? If so, that’s probably why it costs so much.

I'm assuming there are parts beyond the physical wheel for that price?
