Copy that. Used to be mechanical.
Yeah, and the laws governing it are still at that point. :)

I have a friend who found out after purchasing a car it had roughly double the actual mileage on it because shady dealer swapped out digital gauge cluster. That could happen with analog and it still happens with digital. I'm all for updating the law to have a permanent odometer reading in power train or something but then someone will just figure out how to reset that too...

Are they relying solely what's in the IPC, or is the PCM keeping track (or combination thereof for redundancy). One day they'll unify all data, particularly on the telemetry.
IPC only. No redundancy(Pretty wild)

If I'm not mistaken, Volvo has it stored in the CEM. Been a couple years since I wrenched on one since my S60 mostly just sits in the driveway unused. Dealer can see that the DIM was replaced and see what actual mileage is. I guess I need to take that car in for the airbag recall. haha. Here's my 320k mile 02 S60 for the new airbag.

If I was going to buy a used car, I would personally grab the VIN and start doing research on CARFAX or some of the other sites that could tell me potential history of the VIN/vehicle. If info looks suspect, I'd walk away from the sale.

Yes, that is one way to see odometer fraud assuming there are service records.

Sorry to bump an old thread but is it still the case that Mileage can not be adjusted down o the Ford Clusters? Or has something changed over the last few years?
