Sorry for a dumb question but I don’t have my truck yet. Here is the context: I want to get a truck bed bike rack - linked below:

https://www.thule.com/en-us/bike-rack/truck-bed-bike-racks/thule-insta-gater-pro-_-501501

This nifty rack features a part that goes in the gap between the tailgate and bed - and the rack and bike are secured with the tailgate up. So, that raises the question as to how does one get down from truck bed. The box step that comes with the truck is not an option for the obvious reason that the tailgate is up...

I’d appreciate any ideas. In case the type of running boards matter, the truck I am getting is a platinum and will have automatic running boards.

Probably over thinking it here... walk to side of bike, swing first leg over tailgate onto bumper (taller part), swing other leg over, step down to ground.....or slide across to lower middle part of bumper, then step down. Either way, all that maneuvering happens outside of tailgate.

Or, sit on side of bed, swing self around to legs hanging over side close to ground, then jump off that 1-2 feet.

Now, if you‘re a “little person” and thus the tailgate is like a wall.... well, you’re screwed. ??

Looks like you can mount bike front wheel on the rack with the tail gate down and it will hold the bike.

You then get down and close the tail gate to lock it in place.

Or, just use a couple of cheap ratchet straps. Each side from handlebars to front corner tiedowns. Bikes are light and it doesn't take much to hold them up. I transported motorcycles like that.
But, just step over the tailgate to the step bumper and down.

I typically get in and out of the bed of my truck from the side. I use the top of the tire as a step and grab the side of the bed to pull myself in or let myself down.

Thank you very much! That seems like a good idea.
