Obvious rust aside, I noticed this when under the truck today. Concerning?

Same with me, looked like a little soft, dirty "grease" on the drive shaft just behind the brown/red boot (dust shield?). I cleaned it off and will keep an eye on it. Maybe the output shaft seal weeps a little as it wears in? Who knows.

These are going to weep.
all seals do to some extent.
the portion of the seal that you can see is a dust boot and the seal is at the end of the trans extension. ( all integrated into one part )
There must be some weeping to keep the seal and boot lubricated to keep from burning up.
There should be three forms of oil control at the back of the trans.
Tailshaft bushing within the trans has some pretty tight tolerances when new.
Any oil that gets past the bushing should be retained by the end seal.
And then we have the boot. That is to keep crap from the outside of the yoke from getting to the seal..
(okay, 2 forms of oil control and one environment control)
The yoke must be coated with to prevent it burning up.

not something I would be concerned about unless it starts dripping on the driveway.

Thanks for your information, makes me feel better. I tend to worry about things that are normal if I don't have experience with them.

In this case I probably wouldn't have even noticed the "weep" if I wasn't under the truck looking at the heat shield/ sound deadening above the drive shaft that has a recall on it to do a better job fixing it in place.

That’s exactly how I noticed. I went under to check the truck to look at the heat shields and I noticed a tiny bit of oil/grease it was black so probably some grease just weeping out. Plus it’s been -10-15 here so that doesn’t help. It’s not dripping so I’ll keep a eye on it. Like you guys as well.
But like you said a tiny bit of weeping from there is probably not abnormal.
Thanks for the info

Update it’s been -25c here the last few days so damn cold. I went for a drive today and checked my Seal to see if it was weeping still and it looked like it was a bit wet under there again. Should I get it looked at? Or could it be because it’s so cold out ? It only started to since it go cold out.

I think that the damp place on the yoke could be residue from assembly lube placed on yoke during the build process. I wouldnt sweat it for now.

Ya and with the cold some extra could be going past the dust seal etc? Mines wet around the yoke itself almost making a drip. I mean it could drip for a year and still be 90% full. So I’ll wait and try to make 1 trip and get a few things done

I’ll see how it is when it gets a bit warmer out and if I get this looked at I may as well get the recall done at the same time.
Thanks !

After taking a drive today in -30 I took a pic about a hour after. Keep in mind I also back into the driveway and the front of the truck sits a lot higher up. I’ll probably get it in sometime in the next few weeks. Want to wait and see if the 1.7.1 fix is going to be OTA or have to go to dealer.

It has only started to do this since the really cold weather.

Seems to me from the picture that the rusty surface is abrading the seal as it moves in and out of the output shat. I allege it is the rust that is the problem….

Hi, Does anyone know if I can use the sealant from the 2018 version? The new type is not available in my country and the old one looks similar except for a different color.
