Saw this in the news. Hope this will lead to improved software functionality. No sense paying for something that does not work properly.

Ford has hired away a key Apple executive to run a new business unit that will sell software-related subscription services to vehicle owners.
The Dearborn, Michigan, automaker said Monday it hired Peter Stern, who was Apple’s vice president of services. He’ll be president of Ford Integrated Services, a unit that will combine software and hardware into services.

At Apple, Stern oversaw Apple TV plus, iCloud storage, Apple Books, the arcade and fitness operations and other businesses, Ford said in a statement Monday.

Stern started Monday and reports directly to CEO Jim Farley.

Stern also will expand Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free partially automated driving system, as well as productivity and safety and security services, the statement said.

Asked if people are getting tired of paying for subscription services, Stern said people will buy single services and bundles as long as they see the value.

"When we do that right, customers will sign up not only for individual, ala carte services, but I think we’ll also create bundles of services that make it really easy for customers to get the most out of their vehicles," he said.

Stern, who before Apple was Time Warner Cable’s chief product officer, said there were worries about whether the company would ever exceed $100 per month in average revenue per user. "That was in the rear view mirror pretty quickly because of the value we delivered," Stern said.

Also, Stern said that when he started at Apple, it had only two subscription services, iCloud and Apple Music, but when he left there were over 1 billion subscriptions for services.

"We know the playbook," he said. "We have some great ideas about the services that we need to offer."

He told reporters that he expects safety and security services will have a high number of subscribers. For instance, Ford recently showed off an SUV at a campsite that recognized a bear and activated the horn and lights to scare it away.

Ford, which CEO Jim Farley said has 550,000 paid subscribers for software services with a 50% profit margin, does not immediately plan to separate the Integrated Services unit as a separate business and show its profits on the income statement. But that could be done later, he said.

How about getting the 2021 models updated with the latest Blue Cruise and stop worrying about Bears at campsites? Just saying. But the bear thing is cool...btw.... I hope that is a OTA update soon.

.......not too mention, FORscan. I am sure there are plenty of people who will pay for these things, but I think the community will find a way to work around it.

That wasn't a bear, it was a potential EV truck buyer.

I feel conflicted. I like making money off people stupid enough to buy into extraneous subscription services, but hate the idea of previously included features being subscriptions now. Bluecruise is one of the few things that makes sense to have on subscription because it needs constant fixing. I can't be upset about that profit margin though. I do want the option to save money by getting a truck without the equipment I paid for that could potentially enable subscription services.

Cool. Literally cannot wait to subscribe to the “Premium Base Features” package so I can have auto climate control, heated seats, and phone sync.
“Premium Plus” gets you access to Base and ability to stream audio from your phone, integrated GPS, and auto dimming rear view and drivers side mirrors.

“Platinum” gives you all of Plus, and phone sync’s gps, Siri, adaptive cruise, lane centering, comfort blinkers, and Wi-Fi.

“Limited” is Platinum, and BluCruise, auto adaptive headlights(build dependent), rear heated seat functionality(build dependent), and access to HomeLink.

A lot of companies that offer subscription services to their software fail to deliver a compelling value in the long term. I can understand paying monthly for something that regularly receives feature updates, bugfixes, and security patches. Even if the vehicle OTAs moved to a subscription model, that would probably help incentive fixing the stuck OTAs too.

I think Ford should learn how to properly update vehicles first. Putting the cart before the horse.
Amen! New trucks rolling of the line has the latest edition of Blue Cruise while us 2021-2023 are still on older versions. I would like the new BC before my 3 year subscription is over. BC 1.0 is ok, but from what I saw the latest one is much better. Hopefully this new Exec gets us updated first.
