…shouldn’t a closed box be ran to avoid water from saturating your filter and potentially causing damage?

I just washed my truck and there is quite a bit of water sitting on the OEM box. See attachment for picture.

I wanted to run an open box because, you know, more sound. But seeing the amount of water it would be sucking up has me rethinking. But a heavy rainstorm would introduce a lot through the inlet anyways. I dk?

CAIs are mostly closed systems, so you can pick a system you feel comfortable with. While not as loud as an open air filter element, they use shorter and larger diameter intake tubes resulting in altered throttle body sound. I will say they aren't that much louder than stock, but you'll notice it.

I'm more curious how that much water go under your hood just by washing it. ?

All CAI systems are of the closed box design, as you were referring to. Any open style, like what you’re alluding to, is not an actual cold air intake system.

Not sure, it’s a Tremor so possibly the hood vents let more in

U would need total coverage of the intake diameter to suck in any kind of water...as in submerging it underwater...a couple of drops from rain or washing will probably not even make it past the filter

I have AFE open CAI so I could hear it. I don’t have a water problem with it. The hood makes the top enclosure a it compresses foam connectors.
This is a cold air system as

To play devil's advocate...if the hood seals the top is it really "open"? I had a true open air filter on Volvo turbos in the past, no sealing to the hood. Sounded awesome but it sure wasn't a "cold air intake" at that point. This mimics a close box via the hood sealing against the rubber weatherstripping. I'm sure it's louder than my closed CAI box but same principle.

Oh, I see what you got but that’s not a cold air intake. Those foam seals never seal completely and you suck in hot air from the engine so yeah, no that’s not a CAI.

I agree Dakar. I’m not sure how tight the top seal is against the hood. Like checking to see if the light goes out in the fridge when door is shut. I guess you can leave the foam compression off the box and then you would get maximum sound.

If you can get a scan tool and monitor incoming air temps, it would be interesting to compare before and after temps between the stock setup and various cold air intake setups. I suspect many are actually warm or hot air intakes with soundtrack.

I understand on the seal but AFE has engineers that test their products. Do you really think they would go to all the trouble to design a seal that wouldn’t qualify for a CAI. You have somewhat forced cold air coming in to the path of least resistance and likely enough pressure to stop any minute seal leak. Unless you use a thermometer to test your theory of warmer air coming it’s just a possibility. I am sure AFE did the proper testing to dispute your claim.

You should run a test and put a line of chalk or marker on top of the foam all the way around. Close the hood and see if it transfers to the hood

This is my (dirty) aFe. Interesting they make different "CAI" designs, so there must be a point to the different styles, but the overall shape is similar to the open one.
