When I made an appointment for the update, I reminded dealer special adapter cables needed, but also order adapters needed from Amazon, just in case. Update failed, tech said Ford related only certain of the correct adapters work. So now awaiting reordered adapters from Ford which dealer didn't have. I am becoming a skeptic. Ford's PR on this issue is terrible!
Dealer told me the same thing, they did not understand they needed specific adapters to do this work. They told me they'd call when the adapter came in to bring my truck back. Overall they were very helpful and honest about the lack of knowledge they had about these updates. Which while discouraging at least was honest.

The dealer had mine all day yesterday for the second attempt to get the updates working. I had advised them on the service bulletins and the requirement for the correct cables and they assured me that they had what it took.
At the end of the day they told me that the updates still failed and that the tech thinks it is because they updated the FDRS program to address the trailer brake recall and it is causing issues with updating the modules. He also stated that his USB drive is very old and wanted to get a new one and wait for FORD to issue a new update to FDRS.
I am in the tech field and I call BS! but I am not going to drop almost $700 to get what it takes to do it myself either so I get to wait for round three.

@Ford Motor Company you have now baited us into making appointments at your dealers with a promised fix for broken OTA updates. I did just as the email I received said made an appointment on April 7. I drove into the dealer with no other problem then OTA not working. My $75,000.00 truck has now been sitting in there shop for 2 weeks. My truck is now bricked, the dealer says update doesn't work and they are WAITING ON FORD FOR AN ANSWER. And have no idea as to when it will be returned. You have now betrayed thousands of loyal Ford Customers with this.

After your experience, I am hesitant to take my truck back for round #2. Ford, how about communicating what's the problem here? You are ---off some of your best customers. This could become a PR disaster.....

They are too worried about the lightning to deal with the real problems from generationally loyal customers. This is unacceptable on the highest level. Non cooperative dealers, bricking trucks.

Just got a phone call from Ford. They said I can now make an appointment with a Ford dealer of my choice to have the 1.7.1 updated installed. He assured me that everything is a 100 percent go. It would be nice if the Ford representative that lurks in the shadows on this form would chime in. I would just like some reassurance that this time it will work.

I am now very sorry that I made this appointment and brought my truck in, and trusted what the dealer told me. I specifically asked do you have tech a certified with SYNC 4 and OTA. I was told "virtually all of our techs are certified " that alone should have alerted me, and in hindsight I probably should have called it off right there. I now feel stupid for trusting them. During the service, I wasn't there, I was at work, I received multiple alerts in Ford pass app regarding module communication failures due to low voltage. 8:31am that day! At this point my heart sunk, they just bricked my truck! I called emeedity, they said theres no problem sir this happens during programming. Are you sue? Yes Sir, this happens all of the time don't worry. Well I should have worried. I have now lost the truck for 2 weeks and have no insight as to when if ever I'll ever get the truck back. Be very leary of dealers the stupid service advisers are only there to protect the idiots it the shop. You'll get no where with Ford's customer service line they'll only call your dealer and tell you they will handle the problem. Obviously the dealer has now BS'd Ford Customer Service as well. There is no customer service at Ford it's an impenetrable wall that seems only to want to protect itself against litigation and nothing else. No one will answer anything with a honest answer. There's no direct email for communication that can be documented. No it's chat or 800 number only. No one will take responsibility as an advocate for the customer. All I can say is be very careful you'll have very little to no recourse.

While I'm on record for defending dealership techs for not having the skill set for this new digital OTA platform, there's NO DEFENSE for a professional mechanic to attempt this work without following the EXPLICIT onscreen directions in FDRS.
I assure you that FDRS relentlessly reminds the user to put the truck on a battery charger before each and every update.

You CAN'T miss it!

That's just arrogance or indifference to the recommendation.

And you should know that the fellas that have taken this procedure on their own and didn't feel like they needed to follow the directions quickly discovered the failure rate is high when voltage isn't maintained and steady. Lots of folks had to run and purchase a quality battery maintainer and learn how to properly connect it to the truck. (you do not connect to both battery posts because of the BMS system)

Be very careful when you drop your truck off. You will not know the qualifications of the tech that will work on your truck, you will not know if he has a battery maintainer on your truck during the service. Has he upgraded to the latest FDRS software that morning? Has he disabled AV software as prescribed in the TSB? You will never know! And when your truck is bricked no one will be able to answer for anything

Thank you for the heads up. I’m waiting a little longer before I test the water. I agree with you there is no Ford life jacket.

You are so.... right on all of this I should have listened to you and spent the money and done it right my self! I feel very stupid now for having entrusted the dealer to do this for me.

Don't beat yourself up for being optimistic.
It's a better approach more often than not. :)
