Who uses factory navigation vs google maps vs waze? I like factory because it finally does trailers. I didn't have it on my F350, because it didn't then.

Do I have to continue using Fordpass to update? Keep updated?

Thanx - Dean

I happen to rely on the OE navigation for 99% of my travels. Yes, it can occasionally attempt to lead one astray or suggest less-than-most-efficient routing. I will be renewing my Connected Navigation subscription when my 3-year free trial ends this summer.

With my relatively compact / low / easily maneuvered trailer I do not use the trailer specific feature which I find overly 'cautious' and therefore a nuisance (too many alarms not applicable to me even with the correct trailer profile info entered). The 5th-wheel trailer seen in my sig-block may look big, but the rig is actually shorter overall length, only ~10' high, ~7' wide, and much more maneuverable than my previous 17ft bumper-pull camper.

Nav updates are not dependent on FordPass.

You end up subscribing to connected navigation that’s in FordPass. I use it as well . Cell cost and service sucks where I live so I don’t use Apple Maps or google as much

I hope the don’t shut it off completely without a subscription. I am sick of the subscriptions and you don’t own X feature on your vehicle unless you pay. This “You will own nothing and be happy” business model in the name of security and safety is wrong on so many levels. @Deanrd52 I went down same rabbit hole as I have been same predicament with poor signal. I came to the same answer reference here, and am extremely frustrated.

I wired a Garmin RV 770 gps into to a key powered port on my F350. It was mounted in center dash tray and worked well, but I kept switching it out for updates or to use in RV. I have OE for a year so we'll see what transpires. I hear ya on subscriptions. The bluecruise at $50/mo is nuts. $80 a year for nav with updates etc is doable. See how long before price goes up, once they got ya...

Might be wrong but I'm pretty sure the subscription can be renewed via the Ford Owner's website without FordPass.

IMO some subscriptions provide value commensurate with cost and this is one of them for me (it's the only subscription I have on my truck). YMMV, no worries!

Probably can. Have to give Ford credit for at least giving us Ford Pass for free unlike Onstar and others

I go factory if I am driving alone. The system's voice functions work seamlessly with it for me and I like not having to worry about dead reception areas. If the wife is coming and we're going somewhere as a family sometimes I put her phone up on carplay and use google maps. I just did my first renewal after my 3 year free trial. I think it's worth it.

She has NAV in her 10 year old acura but it's not user friendly, so after insisting on getting it on her car she always uses Google Maps. My system by comparison feels like a 5 year old can figure it out.

For a limited user selection, I agree. However, the vast majority of users this a fleecing. At 960.00 a year plus taxes, I find this very hard to define a ROI that is in the positive. If was 1/3 that cost maybe. To put this into perspective the average median salary in your home state of Texas is 45,970 after taxes/etc as single person is 36,776.00 . This means 3% of the take home pay goes to this subscription. This is hard pill to swallow for an updated map program. Microsft's office 365 subscription is only 99.99 and 129.99 for a family plan of up to six people. Sorry this subscription is a fleecing of epic proportions.

Edited to prevent misinformation spread...

I don’t like how often the factory nav loses signal. Makes it almost worthless if you travel outside of cell signal range.

I have no idea what the heck you're looking at with a $960+tax annual subscription renewal fee???

My Connected Navigation annual renewal for 6/6/2025 to 6/6/2026 is available on my Ford Owner's Webpage for $85.28 including tax:

Since I can't see that page until my trial is about to expire, thought it was 80.00 monthly. That price is better at 85.28. However, still based on Micrsoft's pricing which is staple of the world, this is extermely over priced software. It should be in the 20-25.00 dollar range.

@Buyer2021 I do apologize for my sharp opinions but raisin my little ones has made a grumpy old man out of me and I am not even that old. My newest daily hobby with my wife's spending and my children's destruction is accounting.

You're not paying for "software", you're paying for the Connected aspect of the service that includes various real-time features such as traffic warnings, etc.

I doubt any provider could support the cost of the infrastructure to provide that for $20-$25 and still earn a competitive return for their stakeholders.

In any case, if you don't find value in the Connected services, don't pay for them, No Worries!

No apology needed and you do have my empathy. We all make our life choices and then have to live with them within our financial means to the best of our abilities (which often includes some sacrifices).

I've certainly been through times in my life when I didn't buy new vehicles and didn't pay for 'luxuries' like connected navigation.

I hope you can get beyond being a too-young grumpy old man, wishing the best for you. ?

Hah I hear you on that. My wife is pretty good in the spending dept but my son always seems to find new ways to destroy everything in the house.

As far as the OP goes. I use the Ford nav in moving map mode when I'm just driving around town but if I actually need to use the GPS I use Android Auto. My understanding is that the map updates are part of the "Connected Navigation" package as mentioned above and independent of Fordpass. From what I have read the updates actually come bundled with OTA updates but if you let the subscription expire the nav will still work in moving map mode but you won't be able to select a destination to navigate to.
