I'll be buying a folding bed cover this week and would like some advice. I want a folding cover, but I'm concerned about hail damage, and it needs to fold up for full access of the bed. Are the FRP panels more impact resistant than aluminum? How does Weatherguard/Lomax compare to some of the others such as Linex or Leer? I do prefer more of a flush fit without the obvious bump up that some of the covers have. Cost wise I would like to keep it in the $1,200 ballpark. Any advice is appreciated.

Aluminum is rugged and is susceptible to dents. Fiberglass is susceptible to fading, cracking or breaking. Pick your poison.

I purchased and installed a BAKFLIP MX4 aluminum trifold for my short bed F-150 three years ago that is parked outside all year long. It's only been through a couple short light to moderate hail storms, but has no visible dents and still works great.

The fiberglass gets heavy once it start to soak up water.

Realtruck owns Gator, Extang, Bak and Undercover. Many of the parts are interchangeable including clamps drains rails etc…The Line-X ones are nothing more than rebranded Bakflip MX4s.

I’ve owned them all and they all hold up just fine. It comes down to preference; some fold flat only, some have prop rods so you can use more of the bed without having to remove the cover. Extang uses a knob to unlock the back panel instead of a pull cord, etc…

Check on FB Marketplace. They are always gently used ones for sale there. People selling their truck, or going to a toolbox, etc. You can generally find a deal and save some money.

I love the roll up Bak Revolver X4S on my Lightning. The issue I had with the fold up was blocking the back window when fully open.

I've found most leak pretty badly. After lots of research I found Lomax to be the best. I first ordered the full bed open but none of them actually allow you to use your full bed. They all take up some space and are bolted in. So I went with the regular Lomax bedcover so I can Lift it out and put in the back seat area when I need to use the full bed. This has happened and if I would have had the full fold up it would have been in the way causing problems with the loading. Best decisions I made getting the regular version. It's has kind of a line-x like coating and texture. I love it. Amazing bed cover and I can take it out without any tools just tilt and lift it out. Going through high pressure car washes might have a little moisture around the tailgate but no standing water like other covers I've seen. That little bit of moisture only happens with high pressure car washes. Heavy down poors in the south and it is dry as a bone. The Ford covers seem to be the worst.

I’m on my 3rd undercover ultra flex on the same truck in 2 years. The version I bought was pretty neat with a light bar accessory that slides onto the drivers side rail. It leaked bad and when I’d open it water would rain down from any panel that was standing up. They sent me a new one and it did the same thing after a few months. They sent me a third one and it was a “revamped” model that took the cool light on the rail away. Really sucks because I’m sure I paid extra for a feature I no longer get. Now this third one is doing the exact same thing. Their customer service and warranty process is great and helpful but man this sucks.

I went with the UC ultra flex because I had it on 3 previous trucks with zero issues. For some reason this damn 14th gen doesn’t like it one bit.

Retired and not looking. I am driving the wife crazy.
The driest cover I have had is the good old original vinyl cover that had snaps. It was built by a name that escapes me but they are well known.

Bought a new truck and bought an updated version that use the hook and loop method of fastening down to the top of the fenders. It worked well and was easy to roll up and back, although it did take a small amount of additional time to make it taut. like 15 or 20 seconds.

I now have a 3-panel folding cover on a 2021 I recently bought. It is metal based vinyl covered top that is heavy, as in heavy. Starts heavy with the first panel, heavier with the second panel, then the third panel actually pulls out an inch of so to get it up. Don't know about the water seals yet. one would think it seals, but have not been under it in the daylight to check the light. Not sure I like it either.

I had a rolling metal cover that I really liked, but it had some cheapness problems where it connected from the front cover into the bed. It also had an area across the front of the bed was wide open. Supposely this company stands by its product so I called. They told me it was made that way. We had a serious conversation and she finally agreed to send me an additional seal. I had that one a grand total of 6 months before I totaled the truck. I did not get much experience with the water sealing on that one. The concept is good. Not sure about the longevity. Having had one, I would buy another if I could get past the minor cheapness problems. Attitude at the manufacturer when they supposedly stick by their products for life pissed me off. Plus they are expensive.

I use the tri fold material over aluminum.
The best feature it has is you turn one handle to unlock it and when you close it you just shut it like a trunk lid and it locks.

Interesting that your Undercover keeps leaking at the seams. Assuming your rails are properly installed and it’s latching all the way down?

I had some leakage around the tailgate but have added the seal which fixed that.

Yeah, I get the usual around the tailgate area which I expect. Most recently my front panel was soaked, the middle was wet but not soaked. I’ve double checked the rails but may have to check em again. This go around had new rails so they were a fresh install as well.

With all three sections flipped up against the window, how far does it hang over the bed? I'm thinking about the lost space if I carry an ATV in the bed.

This is exactly why I went for the standard one that you can unhook and lift out. You can take it out of your way anytime you want. Without having to unbolt anything. And just drop it right back in when you want to put it back on. Lomax is better than the backflip. I was deciding between those two. Lomax drops in and out with no tools. And doesn't leak. Also the backflip you have to cut the bed to put a drain in. You don't need to do that with the Lomax. Lomax is much better design.
