Will I need two usb ports on my laptop for the usb method? One for the mongoose and one for the flash drive? My laptop only has one usb on it.

When doing the updates, would it be beneficial to connect an Ethernet cable between the modum and computer to increase speed and connection reliability? My WiFi is fairly fast but the Ethernet hardwired speed is around 1GBPS with no dropouts.
the Ford servers are usually slower than Wi-Fi so speed is not a concern, but stability might be. If your Wi-Fi has a tendency to drop out occasionally then a cable would be worth it.

Unless you're at the edge of your WiFi range or have something that will cause interference, you should be fine.

It's helpful to have more than one port available, but you can get away with it. You don't need the Mongoose connected while it's copying to the USB drive. You'll just be doing a lot of cable swaps for USB updates. A cheap USB hub can help.

Wanted to thank all the contributors on this thread for all the knowledge and assurance I could tackle updates via FDRS. I'm not done yet but I've now broken through a stuck IPC update (had to fall back to can bus method which worked and took the advertised 5-6 hours to finish). Just did a GWM update via USB this morning without issue and now see an APIM update as the next step which I'll pickup on tonight after work.

The other module updates (PCM, ABS, etc.) have smoothed out some drive quality issues as well so feeling good about this all being worthwhile (ignoring I've had to sink money and time into what should be a functional OTA process).

Thanks to this great community.

...fall back on CAN bus method....... LOL

Hell, that's the only way I've ever gotten an IPC to update, USB has never worked for me. So CAN bus + IPC is the norm as far as I'm concerned! ?

Yup - i didn't find a success story in the thread on this one either - but FDRS sure wants you to try USB!

There were USB successes early on—about a year ago—when the first IPC update was released. It came in two parts. The first part installed via USB which led to a second part which installed via CANBUS. It was much faster than the current release but also more prone to errors, so Ford pulled it and re-released it as a single update.

I am about to download the FDRS software from the link one the first post. There are multiple options, what all do I need to download? Just trying to get a head start before my Saturday update session.
