My 2021 XLT has a column shifter and therefore no work surface option. I don't want the option, but top (or lid) of the center console itself is a mystery.

The top portion that flips up (or lid) is 2-3 inches think and there appears to be nothing in this area. Seams like a lot of waisted space.

Is there an extra compartment here that I am not seeing? I don't need the extra room as I would just end up piling more crap in there.

Thanks for your help. It's keeping me up at night... LOL LOL

hahahaha. I went through the same thoughts for 3-4 months. I just haven't found a mechanical way to get into that arm rest space. It definitely could have been used as more storage.

I also wonder why the console door\padding is so thick.
So, the work surface isn't an option for a column shift, that seems strange.

You can get A work surface for the column shift 40/20/40 "bench" seat, but it's different than the widely marketed center console version.

What’s wild is those with a console shifter without the work surface wonder what’s in the armrest too.

Rumor has it that’s where Ford is hiding all the microchips that are holding up other people builds.

You guys rock. LOL I hope that I won't just be a DRIVE BY on this site. Looks great and full of opinions and other information. See you soon (Unless I pass you in my F150!)

This truck is way too fast for my grocery getter and I love it!

Carve out the foam like you would a Pelican case and you could probably store a G43 in there.
Think an H&K MP5 could fit in there? Asking for a friend.

OP - You're right to be curious. Part of the reason I wanted the work surface is because the console lid sans work surface just seems like major wasted space. Ford should have just made a dual layer console like Ram has for those without the work surface. They definitely cheaped out on this one.

I still think the fold-down console shifter is stupid....

That Ram console...?

Lucky. LOL I guess the only reason I thought there was a secret compartment was Ford did a really good job using space in the Gen 14. Just goes to reason that they would use the space under the armrest...

I have the rare column shifter with interior work surface option. I had to configure it like this though when I ordered. ?

This is much more useful being able to have a flat surface without needing fold down the shifter. Thought about ordering my truck like that but ultimately wanted the sport package.
