Aloha, I just bought a 2024 Coyote F150 XL yesterday. I got 110mi on the thing. I live on the big island of hawaii and have to work at the top of mauna kea tomorrow (13,500 foot elevation). You need a 4x4 to get up there, but the road is graded fairly well and it won't be anything gnarly off reading. Would y'all advise again taking the new truck up there while I am still breaking in the powertrain. I ordered some amsoil last night (cannot get locally) and plan on changing the oil when I reach 3,000 miles

I feel like if you have another option, I'd probably take it.

I would following the manufacture's instructions by varying your speed, try to avoid hard breaking, and avoid high RPMs. I would imagine that there are tens of thousands of work trucks out there every year that get zero consideration regarding break-in and have no issues caused by the lack of break-in.

4L with manual gear selection will let you exercise it throughout RPM ranges.

The master mechanic at the dealer said he wouldn't break in his truck that way. I'm just gonna error on the side of caution an abstain from driving up the mountain til I change the oil. He recommended changing the oil at 3k miles, again at 5k miles and after that, I should be good changing the oil in 5k mile intervals

I'd change the oil ASAP. The issue is getting out residual manufacturing debris. Just drive it is good thinking, but don't be punching it! No reason to not use 4x4. If you're worried about stress on the drive train, use 4 Low on the gravel.

Agreed. I would put no more than 1k on the first crankcase of oil. Change it at 5k intervals thereafter.

I beat on my truck from day 1. I have 8000 miles on it and I don’t loose a drop of oil. Always the same on the dipstick. Need to seat those rings.

If you keep the RPM's below 4-5 K it should be just fine.. Braking coming back down the mountain might be more of a problem. Listen for weird noises and vibrations too.

My experience with my previous 12, and this one, is to manually shift in D using +/- On this truck , I locked it down to 2nd and shifted at 25-3500 rpm for the first 1000km. Changed oil and continued using S mode. Lately I lock it down to 5th and run it there for city commuting, just shy of 2000km now. Have been checking the oil weekly and hasn't used any. ?
