I'm torn between the Nitto G3 and Cooper Road+Trail. My Hankook factories are down to 6/32 and will be replaced in the next few months. I'm 95% pavement in NC, but I do take it on gravel roads, forest service roads, some random fields when deer hunting, and next year will start taking it west for pheasant hunting. Road noise, handling, and reliability are my top concerns.

I was all set on the Nitto G3 until reading Tire Rack reviews and watching their video where they mention road noise and horrible winter driving. The Coopers top the charts in the same tests, but I've had Coopers before and they were less than ideal (although in fairness they were HT tires and I was taking them places they had no business going, plus this was almost 20 years ago). The Coopers are about $30 cheaper per tire.

I've ran the Toyo AT3 on my previous truck and they were amazing, but they are priced out of my budget at the moment (almost $100 more per tire).
Were the Toyo AT3 quiet on the road??

The Terra Grappler G3 is light years better in the rain compared to the G2. I’ve owned them both and can speak from actual experience.

I can tell you that the Nitto G3’s aren’t loud in my experience. Snow and ice performance was bad in Tire Rack’s testing……so if you want a better option take a look at the Dueler Ascent.

Or you could get one of the best street tires made and go with the Michelin Defender. You will still make it through anything else an A/T will…….but mud performance will be slightly decreased.

I haven’t made up my mind between the Bridgestone and Michelin to replace my Nitto’s, but I know these are my best two options.

How did you like your Nitto's in the snow? Think I saw you mentioned they weren't bad in a previous post.

I strongly considered the Defenders and they were at the top of my list. My only hesitation is 1) vanity... I like the look of an AT tire. I've seen the Defenders on trucks and it's not my favorite. But more importantly, 2) I've ran with HT tires before and have had to be rescued a few times. I go places currently without issue, but worried I'll run into trouble. Cell service isn't the best where I go. I've been in that pickle before and want to avoid it if possible.

Curious what is driving you towards the Bridgestone. Didn't you just get your Nitto's recently? Thanks for all your help, it's much appreciated!

The Nitto’s felt fine in snow/ice last winter. I had no complaints……but the testing from Tire Rack shows that there are definitely better options.

I’ll keep them until they are worn out. They have 18k miles on them, but I’m already looking at the next set since it will probably be sometime before winter next year that I need another set.

I would not have categorized the Nitto's as being loud. Probably a little louder than the stock Hankooks, but only a little. In terms of loudness, I would say they are a quite AT tire. I thought they were good in the snow this past winter in Colorado, and did well in heavy rain. I have also been off roading (not mud), and they performed admirably. The stock Hankook tires were not good in the snow and wore badly. I thought I had some type of front end issue because of the wear on the Hankooks, but the Nitto have been great.

I had Cooper AT3's on a Tacoma. First set was shot in 35K miles. Discount tire did me right and I got a new set for next to nothing. 2nd set was okay. A little noisy for what they were. But, I doubt I would get a set of Cooper's at this point.

I had Toyo AT3's for just a tick over 75K. Very quiet until the last couple thousand miles and I would have zero issues running them again.

I have had my Terra G3's for about 8K now and have been very pleased with them. As quiet as the Toyo. Ride very smooth. I never had much trouble in the rain with the Toyo's until the end but the Nitto is better in the rain. My only complain with the Terra G3 is rocks. They hold gravel really bad and then eject them only at high speeds so they sound like a 22 going off after you've been on the gravel.

I don't put much emphasis on Tire Rack testing. Sure some of its neat and good data but in the end I take it with a grain of salt. In NC we don't get tons of snow so I wouldn't worry too much about Tire Rack's poor snow performance reports. A lot of people don't like the Toyo in the rain. I personally had zero issues with them in the rain.

If I had to replace my truck or if all my tires got nails in them and I needed new tired tomorrow, Toyo AT3 and Terra G3 would be my picks. If I can afford the price of the Toyo, I would highly consider it. But if I am on a budget, I would have zero issues with the Terra G3.

Not sure where you are in NC, but there are a few places you can get a good price on tires. Especially Toyo and Nitto.

Thanks for this, that's very reassuring. I've been reading some other real world reports of the Coopers and they say about what you said. Most of the only positive reviews I can find are from those that say they only run Coopers.

My hold out now on the Nitto is the rocks. Been seeing that, too. Considering the Hankook Dynapro AT2 Xtreme's. That, or just pay more for what I know is good - Toyo's.

The rocks are a little annoying on the Terra G3. But the smooth ride, quite ride, and handling in the rain outweigh the rocks in my book. But everybody is different.

That's odd. I recall seeing the G3s get solid scores for wet/snow and many others have done the same. I don't recall seeing Tire Rack or anyone else give it a "horrible" review for winter driving.

Horrible may have been a stretch on my part. This is the review I was referencing, though: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/taking-off-road-tires-on-road?ttid=337#summary

That said, I've read and watched several videos that say otherwise so I'm not putting much stock into that review anymore.

That’s a good point. Everything is a trade off these days it seems. Do you think the rocks could get thrown onto the road and end up hitting other cars? Not so worried about my vehicle. Seen you mention they hold on until high speeds, so has me worried a bit. Never had a tire I've had to worry about that before.

Don't think I replied about location, we're in the High Point/Greensboro area. Discount Tire has been my go to for the last 20+ years. My old man got remarried after mom passed and is now a Costco guy (I'll let you guess why haha) and been trying to convert me. I like Discount because they are everywhere and honor their warranty. About 15 years ago, I had a nasty double blow out while deer hunting in East Texas on an old forest service road and luckily there was a Discount nearby that I got towed to. They honored the warranty and got me back on the road within hour of them opening.

That said, I’m not afraid to shop around for a good deal. Since Discount price matches, I can always take the best price back to them. If you know of any good places in the area, I’d be happy to check them out.

Could the rocks get ejected into the road? Sure.
Could it damage another car? I guess.

But its small gravel and not boulders. There is far bigger issues on the roads so I wouldn't concern myself with them getting ejected. Also, when the gravel get ejected its usually an upward trajectory into the wheel wells or frame.
