Doing some upgrades on the steering assembly. Came across this serious lever with the orange pull strap. Have no idea Assembly is made to handle more serious leverage. Connects to a booted cable doing back into dash. This lever doesnt show in the manuals ive seen.

Manual release of parking brake.
It's like an "in case of emergency" when the normal way won't allow to disengage.
Ha.
How does one suppose to access it "in case of emergency", disassemble the panel?
And why is not in the manual?

The components involved in your question came up in an unrelated thread about how to get the truck in Neutral when not running.

Another poster provided this YouTube video. According to that video, that "lever" is a tool for tow truck drivers so that they can temporarily put the truck in Neutral when the truck is not running, so they can get it loaded.

Good find... You know whoever owns that truck was pissed the truck wouldnt start and slammed the palm of his hand into that shifter. I cant see that just falling apart while gently switching gears.

Looks like @UNIKRN150 had this issue awhile ago, and I may be corrected in it JUST being a Neutral release not an ebrake release...

Thanks. Makes sense, and now after getting a better look in there, i see its in the brake system.

This is referenced in the back maintenance pages under emergency towing. Don't exceed 30 MPH and only for short distances.

I called the Dealership when this happened (2-years ago) and they had no clue how to get it into neutral.
But they did call me back right away (my local Ford Dealership ROCKS!) and told me about the "temporary" method of putting the truck in "Manual Shift Mode" and putting it in neutral which (as the warning on the display tells you) only buys you 30-min in neutral, then it shifts itself back into "park".

But your engine has to be running long enough to do that
which mine was... barely!

So "if" you're fortunate enough to have that option, it's a little easier than dealing with the orange strap.
;)

I had to use that when the shifter got stuck in drive. What the manual didn’t explain was that you have to hold it to keep it in neutral. The minute you let go it falls back into drive.
I got a crash course in how to operate a tow truck as he didn’t want me to ride it up when lifting it into the bed.
Actually, that was kind of fun.
