Hey all, bought my truck last summer. Previous owner had some accessories installed, including window visors attached to the door above the window. When I removed them, I discovered that there was a gouge underneath the driver's side visor. I don't love the vent look otherwise I'd have just put them back on. Threw some touchup paint on there to protect the gouge from the elements, but it's not pretty.

Spoke to a local body shop, who cautioned me that if I repainted the door, the paint might come out darker than the rest of the truck. Anyone have any experience with repainting Carbonized Grey? Pics of the offending scratch are attached.

I've had my tailgate repainted and both front and back bumpers repainted. The tailgate wound up with some trash in the clearcoat but after it was fixed you couldn't tell the difference. Bumpers colormatched perfectly.

A good body shop should have no issue.

That's great to hear. I would've thought the same thing, but the guy threw me off saying it wouldn't match.

The body shop will blend the paint into adjacent panels to achieve a good match. Having said that, silvers and high metallic colors can be difficult to match.

I had my rear bumper replaced and sprayed recently and it looks fine. This guy has done a lot of work for me over the years and has top notch paint matching ability and skill.

As noted above, a GOOD body shop can blend no problem.

Maybe a hint there .... I'd look for a different body shop.
Haha yeah, on my list. Where I live it's not that easy.

I've heard the same, which is why I'm hesitant. Trying to decide if it's worthwhile or I should just live with it. The stupid scratch is right in my eyeline every time I walk up to the truck, so it's especially a pain.

Agreed, I'm just having trouble getting a sense of what would be a "good" body shop near me. The place I spoke to had great reviews and is Ford Gold Certified, which is why I picked them to adjust my door hinge. I just don't want to spend $1000 to find out the truck looks worse than before.

It sounds like your body shop doesn't want the work, tbh. Not a big enough insurance job for them probably. No body shop should have a hard time matching paint nowadays. I agree $1k out of pocket to fix that is a bit silly, so how much can you live with it?

I wonder if the PO put those on to hide the scratch...

No, a $1000 to repair this is not out of line. Between time and materials it sounds about right.

I would just put the window visors back on. I would rather look at them than the scratch. My eyes would be on the scratch every time I got in the truck. Seem expensive to repaint the entire door and hope for an exact match.

I had a large rock chip on my hood I touched up with the Ford paint. Under certain light conditions it looks respectable, but in other conditions it looks hideous. Before blowing a grand, try to touch it up first. The worst that can happen is you repaint.

My old truck was a similar color and I needed to have a new hood painted. The body shop used some tool to take color readings at multiple spots on the top of each fender and it ended up looking great.

Not sure if this helps but I had that grey on my old truck and had a door repainted because of a dent and scratches. I'm OCD and was told the same thing. To be fair it was darker but wow did I have to really...I mean really look hard. To me it was virtually dead on and I'd much rather live with that than the other. From a liability standpoint they probably need to tell you that but if they are good they should get really close.

Sorry for the delay in responding all...it's been a week.

Deciding on if I can live with the scratch is exactly what I'm trying to do. I'm sure the PO put the visors on to cover it, I've just never really been a visor person. I thought about trying the low profile ones, but to me they just cheapen the look of the truck. $1000 is certainly a hefty fee, which is mainly the hesitation - especially w/ no guarantee it'll look right. I do intend to keep the truck for a long time to come. That's the only reason I'm even considering it.
