How often is there not a ~CuFT of cargo space left? A reliable onboard air compressor is pretty handy as you can power air tools as well.

Careful, if you use regular compressed air in the tires and then fill back up with 50% CO2, moisture within the tire will turn into carbonic acid as the moisture condenses overnight. While not immediately harmful to rubber, prolonged exposure can be detrimental long-term. Additionally CO2 has 50% more mass than traditional air. It's great as a rescue kit, but not a replacement for air. Find someone with a high pressure compressor and just bottle good old atmosphere. It's free. (hint: scuba)
Sounds like you know quite a bit more about this than me, so I believe you! However I've been operating this way for 3 years on this truck, and many years on the previous rig without issue :)

never thought about using an old scuba tank- I have used the CO2 tank for about 30 years in different trucks with no problem, but your point is well taken- as I said I no longer have EASY access to CO2 anyway. In my part of the state there isn't even an airgas place

Talk to your local fire departments. Some of them have their own pumps for refilling their SCBA bottles. They probably have a general fund you can toss a few bones into for the service. Not sure if connection types are similar -- only used approved fittings and don't rig something up (brass will grenade). SCBA pressures are significantly higher than CO2.

120v small compressor can't be beat if you have a PB though.

I figured I'd bump this thread instead of making a new one.

I'm in the same boat after trying to pump up my truck's tires for the first time yesterday, I found that the cord of my portable inflator that I've had forever wasn't long enough to reach the front tires from the only 12v port on the truck. The suggestions in here look nice but are way overkill for my needs. I'm just looking for a simple and portable 120v inflator with a wire or hose long enough to reach all 4 tires vs a full on compressor with a tank. I only found one option at my local Advance but it was set up as a wall-mount and I hate ordering electronic/electrical stuff off Amazon as I've been burned by cheap Chinese crap more often than not.

Maybe you could find a 12v extension if your current inflator works fine for you. I haven't looked but someone probably makes something like that on Amazon.

Timely topic for me, thanks.

I too, would prefer to use the 120 than the 12V.

I want it to be small enough to fit under the back seat.

Currently have an older 12V version and a jump pack, with the 12V outlet. I also have a 12V extension cord so, mobility isn't a problem really, just sorta want to upgrade. Both my truck and camping trailer are both, essentially, power plants.

I know that Viair is a solid brand but no 120V version that I've found and to reach the camper while hitched, would require extra hose.

I like Craftsman's V20 line of tools and they have an inflator that runs on battery, 12V or 120V. The reviews are hit n miss, so I need to go put hands on one before deciding.

Etenwolf V6, goes a different way, being battery powered and usb chargeable but has 100% duty cycle by having a better fan system. Thats a pretty big deal. Even Viair doesn't have that. Nor do they have a target psi that you can dial in, to trigger automatic shut off.

I haven't decided yet. If I have to carry extra stuff, especially in a PB, I'd rather carry an extension cord, than extra air hose.

A 12v extension cord would possibly work, but buying a new one would give me an excuse to toss the current one in my wife's car as a "just in case" thing. I just want something simple that can function the same as my current one. Something along these lines, but I've had hit or miss experience with the Slime brand stuff they carry at Advance:

Amazon.com: Slime 40045 Home Tire Inflator, Wall Mounted 120v, SUV, 4x4 Air Compressor, Heavy Duty, 2X Pro Power, Heavy Duty, with Analog 150 psi Dial Gauge, Long Hose and LED Light, 120V, 4 min Inflation

Edit: I'm going to keep searching though as the Slime stuff doesn't have great reviews and I still want to check places like Home Depot/Lowe's
