Even though I turn the AC off, when I restart the AC come on. Is this normql?

If your HVAC is set to Auto...yes..the A/C light may be on but the compressor might not be. A/C will also come on with defrost.

This is why I never use auto. I dislike when AC "automatically" comes on when I don't want it to. I'm perfectly fine with turning it on myself when I want it.

Even back on my '83 cougar, the compressor was set to run (periodically?) briefly on startup to keep things lubricated. The dealer tech warned me that putting off the repair until it warmed up in a few months could cause damage (compressor failure?).

(I really don't recall what the repair was)

It's normal and one of the very small number of things that annoy me with the new truck. Even when I'm not using auto mode the truck will decide for itself wether the AC will be on or off when I start it up.

Mine came on yesterday after I had driven to town, shut the truck off and did what I had to do. When I came back and started the truck, the A/C was on. The sun had heated up the cab a lot higher than what the temp was set for and was trying to cool down the cab to the setting. The outside temp was around 18 C outside and inside temp was set at 20.0 C. I find it nice that I don't have to play around with the temp controls to make the cab comfortable.
