I have a 2021 3.5 ECOBOOST and it is due for its 60k maintenance. The schedule says it needs to have new spark plugs installed. Has anyone had this done at a dealer and if so, what was the cost?

I had a friend that had a bad coil pack and he asked me to help since his local dealer couldn’t/wouldn't do anything even though it was under warranty. I put a scan tool on it and found which coil it was but we decided to replace all of them and change the plugs while we were at it.
The whole job took me about 45 minutes and that was mainly because I was talking and drinking. The coil packs were right at $300 and the plugs were about $65.

I know that you didn’t ask about any of what I just replied and you don’t need to replace your coils but this is a really easy job to do yourself. The coils/plugs are right on top of the engine and really easy to get to. I’m afraid the dealer will tear your head off at the cashiers counter so I’d definitely recommend doing it yourself if you can.

I was there today having my wife’s Edge’ oil changed. I ask for a ballpark estimate and they said $600. But then again they wanted $185 to replace the swollen lug nuts on her car.

That seems crazy, I had an indy shop charge me less than that on my 07 f150, and 3 out of the 8 plugs broke and had to be extracted.

The shops have a lot of overhead to cover. The question is why not have it done yourself or at the local independent garage that is likely to have a lower hourly labor rate.

A lot of the cost comes from what is the published number of hours to do the job and this depends in part on how easy it is to access all of the plugs.

I do wonder why they are to be changed at 60K miles when most vehicles have recommendations of changing them every 100K miles. Curious as to whether they calculate the engine hours with no increase in miles driven with the use of Pro Power onboard by people.

Most with turbos say to change them more often. This was often mentioned early on with the first gen 3.5 and my own experience plugs were starting to gap over spec by then.

Correct, manual does have a little footnote at the 60k saying vehicles with pickup bed power outlet. Expectation is these trucks spend lots of time idling in generator mode so it fits with the schedule farther in book for high idle hours.

Given my own experience and the collective knowledge of this and other forums I would change plugs at every 60k or sooner on all Ecoboost engines. If you have a 5.0 then sure go with 100k if you want to do so.

The 60k interval is for Powerboost models...
Actually the 60k recommendation is for ALL "vehicles with the pickup bed power outlet". The expectation is that the engine will be operated with the vehicle parked and so incur more engine hours than would be indicated by the odometer.

K, my 21 book says 60 if powerboost and 100 if other...
Hmm, I went back and looked and the note says for trucks with bed outlet. It doesn't say Powerboost specifically. Oh well, I'm going to change mine soon since I have 53k miles.

My truck has the bed outlet but I have not used it and so I will go by the 100K mile change interval.

Try the colder spark plugs, and boosted engines go through plugs faster than non boost. I change mine every 10-15k miles. Depending on how I’ve been driving. I also pump out 4qrts of trans fluid and pump 4 new quarts back in every 10k miles. I found the the truck likes the colder plugs. I don’t even really know what that means, but worn out plugs develop a bigger gap and the pressure in cylinder from boost can blow the spark out and cause stumbling under load. Not idle tho.
