While driving my teenage son and his friend back from a birthday dinner the other night, a late model Honda Accord felt entitled to dart around in front of everyone, only to find himself stopped at a red light. I casually pulled up in the lane to his right. He was stopped with his rear tires just past the limit line. I was stopped behind the line. Put the PB in Sport mode and winked at my son. He then told his friend, "Ooh, watch this" with a grin.

The light went green and the Accord didn't have a chance. I could hear his engine trying to go as I passed him. By the time I was across the intersection, his nose was at my tow hitch. By the time the lanes merged into one, I was two full long bed truck lengths ahead for a smooth merge.

I don't think I gave the accellerator more than 1/2 pedal.

His friend, who was sitting on the rear driver side seat, and watched the Accord get passed said, "Dude, your dad gapped him!"

Yes, I know; cool story, no video didn't happen, and don't street race.
But someone on the road needed a brief lesson in humility. ?
And my teenage son's friend thinks I'm cool. ?
Oh, and don't tell my wife I did that. ?

For a full size gas truck- the PB is definitely no slouch. I occasionally rip it off a green light and my wife looks at me like I’m an idiot. ?

Ha ha ha, you need to have some fun right! Watch out for when your son gets his license and he’s racing at every light because he saw his old man do it. ?

I like to take off somewhat slowly and when my trans skips to third gear put my foot into it and then pull away from the vehicle behind me after I know their transmission has likely shifted to the economy gear by then. I also like to slowly accelerate up a long highway onramp up to about 45-50 mph and then put the power down near the top of the ramp and leave the slower vehicles behind me in my dust. ? The 5.0 really does well accelerating from 30 mph on.

I originally got the PB because I needed a bigger truck for my teenage boys and their gear to and from sports events, and the 7.2kW generator was extremely appealing for emergencies and camping. Little did I know that the electric traction motor helps this truck blast off the line from a standstill! I don't look down on anyone that has the 5.0. It sounds better for sure than the 3.5 PB and has great performance in the +3k RPM range. But the the low RPM performance on the PB is absolutely mind blowing.

I don't do it very often, but every once in a while, Sport mode is fun. ?

What you’re describing is the instant torque from an electric motor that all electric and hybrid vehicles benefit from to some degree. I love electric cars for that reason alone. The downsides to all this new technology is of course significant increased weight, higher purchase price, and potentially reduced reliability. TBH, I would love to own a PB myself but it’s just not in the cards for me right now. for a while, I really wanted to own the new electric Ford lightning pick up truck.

My daughters car crapped out at the end of the year and I‘m saddled with massive private school tuitions on one income thanks to our terrible public schools. I gave my daughter my perfectly good and 100% paid for 2014 Mazda CX5 with 82k miles that I could have sold for 12k at the time. I then purchased an XL 5.0 supercab instead of the XLT I really wanted so she could have a clean reliable vehicle to get to work and school with. Still, for an old school but also modern V8 engine, my truck is no slouch. Never would I have ever thought that a pickup truck weighing in at nearly 5k could go 0-60 MPH in just 5.41 seconds. Granted the PB is quicker and has better off the line part throttle response thanks to that electric motor, I am still impressed with my 5.0, and especially that nearly 7k RPM redline. It sounds so glorious when accelerating hard too and approaching that redline.

I’m positive hybrids will be the future and the next generation of hybrid trucks from Ford are surely going to be even better. The Ford Powerboost was a huge step in the right direction and I thank Ford for leading the charge there. Now Toyota, and eventually everyone else will follow their lead now that Ford has proven it works although Stellanis went a different route with their Ram. Exciting times are ahead!

Yes, as an engineer, my mind knew the physics behind low torque of electric motors, but feeling it move a +5klb beast that quick is something that must be experienced to be appreciated.

I got to test drive a Tesla Model S with 900 lb ft of torque so I know. ?

My other vehicle is a C8 Corvette, so our PB is our slow vehicle.. 470 Ft-lbs of torque sitting on top of a 305 rear tire will rip off of the line.

At least it's while you're doing something fun, my wife looks at me like I'm an idiot all the time.

In her defense though......I generally don't give her much reason not too.:ROFLMAO:

My wife gives me crap about owning high HP vehicles, keeps telling me she doesn't see the reason for all the HP, yet she's been driving Explorer Sports and ST's since they came out and gets pulled over in my Mustang every time she drives it....yet I'm the one with the HP problem.

The PB is a ton of fun, even in the 3 short months of ownership so far! My '22 is Livernois tuned so it's got a little extra punch, but I am loving the elimination of the 1-3 shift in normal mode. I love having a very comfortable & utility daily driver that kicks ass when summoned upon. And to give you some perspective, I run a '22 Shelby on the track (and occasionally street drive) that has 760+HP, but I still get giggly when the PB spools up.

I felt the same way when I got my Powerboost, it would give my Mustang a run for it's money from a dig. Though I'm not as lucky as you with the Shelby, I just have a '14 GT/CS, still plenty of fun though.
