I dont see how it could be motor related if Sport mode affects it. Sport mode does nothing to the motor.

So my 5.0 with 100k has what I believe is cam phaser noise when I start out driving when it is cold. I started noticing some light noise around 50-60k and has been getting louder sport mode makes it real noticeable when gas pedal is fluctuated in my neighborhood, so I have been leaving in normal until it warms up good. After it warms up to normal temp I don't hear it in sport mode. No noise at start up at all. I have changed oil every 5k and the first oil change was at 1k with valvoline extended 5w30 oil which I used the first 35k then switched to pennzoil ultra 5w30 going forward with motorcraft filter everytime. I do use this for work. The truck has 3029 total hours with 974 idle hours for reference. Just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this and any thoughts.
My 5.0 hasn’t hit 100k yet, but I’ve read that cam phaser noise on cold starts is actually pretty common for the 5.0s, especially around that 50-60k mark. Some people notice it more in Sport mode because it varies the cam timing aggressively, which can make any phaser “ticking” more noticeable.

In my experience reading forums and talking to other F150 owners, if the noise disappears once the truck is up to temp, it usually isn’t a sign of imminent failure, just the phasers doing their thing until the oil fully circulates. That said, some people have had them replaced under warranty or with aftermarket phasers around 120-150k miles if the ticking gets worse.

Thanks for your info as that makes me feel better about it. I also didn't have any soft codes listed in forscan as I just checked.

So checking with a stethoscope seems like the engine noise is in the top center part of the engine but also when I put it on the fuel high pressure fuel pump which looks like it's on the passenger side it's the loudest so I wonder if a fuel pump could be noisier when it's cold and when it's warm interesting

That HPFP can definitely be described as a tick.

It's not really a tick. It's like a rattle or clatter. The sound reminds me of rocker arms that needed to be adjusted in solid cam engine back years ago

The hpfp runs off the cam so the high the rpm’s the faster the internal piston pumps. So if it’s at higher rpm’s than it would make a lot of sense and would classify as a clatter as revolutions are higher inside the pump also. If it makes it hot is when I’d be worried.

What RPM range are you hearing this? Is the Sport/Normal difference due to Sport holding gears longer and being in a certain RPM range?

The RPM's around 2k and hold it and when you play with the throttle a little going up and a little you can hear that rattle. Sport mode seems more pronounced than normal drive mode. If I keep it in normal drive mode on the way out in the morning to the interstate it is quieter which I have been doing since it has been getting louder. Someone mentioned the VCT exhaust solenoid and was seeing rattling noise issues in 2020 on posts. When I got home, I waited a couple hours for it to cool off, and it is pretty noisy putting a stethoscope on the driver side exhaust VCT Solenoid HL3Z-6M280-A. Maybe not the exact noise but loud. I was looking and it seems ford has been using this same one from 18 to current f150 and other engines, so it might be viable to maybe change it out since they have had issues in the past. More to come as I keep working on finding the cause.
Keep the questions and thoughts coming.

It’s so hard to diagnose a noise under the valve cover as the noise travels. Maybe just compare it to the passenger banks to verify! It’s a somewhat straight forward repair also. Hopefully you can narrow it down!

VCT solenoids are a known issue across the coyote platform. Ive had a Coyote since 2011 and have replaced several VCT solenoids throughout the years for myself and friends.

Stupid question, is your oil level full?
Not the OP but also have a 5.0, should my oil level be full? When I change it, I put in 7 quarts and that gets me right in between the hash marks. Obviously you don’t want it low, but do I need it all the way up to the Full mark?

Depends on year but my 23 and 24 model takes right at 6quarts with maybe a hair over showing to the top edge of hash marks

interesting, my 2024 specs 7.7 (I think?) and I put 7 in with the filter and it gets me halfway. Maybe will start topping off all the way.
