Hey everyone,

Picked up a 2024 501a powerboost about a month ago and love almost everything about the truck. I've had two previous 2.7 10R80 F150s, and I felt as if those transmissions were smooth as butter on up and downshifts. Never had any powertrain issues whatsoever with them.

I've got roughly 500 miles on my PB and have noticed some transmission "quirks". One time I started the truck and quickly put it into drive and it SLAMMED into gear, it felt terrible - I chalked that up to me not giving the truck a couple seconds after turning it on, and hasn't happened since.

Other than that, I find it clunky on the downshifts (specifically 3 to 1 when coming to a stop). I wouldn't say its HARSH, per say, but it is enough that I feel the truck slowing via the transmission when it goes from 3rd to 1st and the truck is in electric mode. I don't remember that at all with my 2.7.

All that to say - is this normal? will it get better after the truck is broken in? am I just a bit too critical and need to give it some time?!

Any comments would be appreciated!

Honestly I'd wait about 4000 miles before worrying about anything powertrain related. That's the break-in period.

Thanks for the reply - that is what I figured, but it feels nicer hearing it from a stranger on the F150 forum :cwl:

I know the transmission is different having the hybrid component, but I think I just came into it expecting the exact same experience as my 2.7s.

I feel it slam into gear sometimes when starting up. I thought it might be instant response of the electric motor. I've got 15K miles on my 2024 after 6 months and it is doing great.

I have noticed the my dog isn't as eager to ride in my truck like my previous one. The instant torque is causing her to bump into the rear seat if she is on her feet.

15k in 6 months! Dang!

Thanks for the reply, glad to hear all is good.

I found I had to learn how to drive it smoothly. I was so enthusiastic about my new super truck I didn’t complain much, but it has been a topic here for sure. It can stumble on the 1 to 3 up shift and down shift abruptly at times for some. I switch between Normal and Sport Mode periodically and drive spiritedly at times. It may never be as smooth as your 2.7’s were, but it’s certainly more powerful. ??‍♂

Thanks for the reply - I'm not too concerned if that is just the way this truck operates and it is normal. I was moreso concerned that there may be an issue, but it sounds like this is just part of the PB lifestyle!!

The PB using the e-motor for 'regen braking' causes down shifts to be a little harsher than other engine options but it will smooth out once the clutches are fully worn in. The software is pretty much dialed in at this point. We were getting powertrain updates about every 6 months or so, it seems to now com about every 10-12 months as things get modified based off of telemetry.

After a few more miles, go into sport mode and beat on it a little.

REALLY appreciate the explanation - that makes a lot of sense to me, and lets my overthinking brain rest a little easier, lol. I drive like a grandma in general, but for break-in I've been extra gentle on the ol' girl. I figure after the first 1000 miles I can finally get into some boost. I can already tell there is MUCH more power than my old 2.7s had.

Thanks!!

I would suggest this. I have a 24 XLT, bought in late June. Every few days I make a habit of using a transmission mode other than normal. I don’t drive it all day in that mode. I just flick it to a different mode for five or 10 miles.

Mine has been very smooth, I’ve had a little to no problem.

Oh yeah, can't beat that off the line torque. The algos have been refined quite a bit. In an EV w/ no gears it's real easy to regen. The PB is blending friction brakes combined with regen through a transmission that's downshifting. That's a helluva thing to be able to make seamless. If you watch all of the variables at play, you'd be amazed at what's going on behind the scenes so to speak to try and hide just how intricate of a dance is going on -- just to try and make the combined braking 'invisible'.

I've never thought of it in the sense of EV regen vs Hybrid and everything that goes along with it behind the scenes. Makes a lot of sense, thanks!!

Once I'm all broken in I'll make sure to do that! Thanks for the suggestion.

I’ve done that since day one…… no transmission issues shift, smooth up and down
