Hi all,
I recently picked up a 2023 5.0 and I'm loving it so far. The only concern I have is that there's this high pitched whining/squeaking sound that I can hear coming pretty loudly from the engine bay when the truck is at idle. When using remote start, this is the first sound I can hear from 20 ft away. I don't have anything to compare it to, so could anyone please chime in with whether this is normal or not?

There's plenty of weird sounds from this truck that I'm not used to haha, but I haven't been able to find anything about this specific really high-pitched noise (I think this is separate from the transmission gear whine that you hear while moving). I was thinking about taking it in to the dealer, but thought I'd check with y'all here before potentially wasting my time.

Sounds normal to me, the whine you are hearing is the transmission pump. They’re pretty noisy since they use straight cut gears

Let's walk through this....

Where do you work?
Have you been there a while?
Do you feel complacent about how you do your job sometimes?
Do you make good money doing it?

Now on the flip side let's examine a worker at a dealership.

If you get a young one he might be eager but he doesn't know what he's doing and he isn't getting paid as much.

If you get the experienced guy. Well he's under the opinion that all customers are &*&^&*($ and don't know anything about anything. Plus he does his best to teach the new tech that.

They are all under time constraints so I would bet the "it drove in here under it's own power, it's fine" rule will apply. Or it can sit there while I do this "no start".

This is just my thoughts and just trying to make light of a dealer trip.. Your mileage may vary.

I usually turn the radio up. Trust my decision that I got an extended warranty and enjoy my ignorant bliss. (until it gets towed to a dealer or something falls off and if the fallen off part isn't important then it could be a toss up for me)

Again----- Grain of salt and all that.

My 21 started doing this recently since my AC went out. Gonna look at the fans and see if there's a place to spray lubricant on it. I'm not worried about it, but it is a new sound. Give me a few hours. I'm in a business meeting now, but I'll post a video of what it sounds like afterwards. Similar to yours.

Could be a belt. I'll test it.

Mine does it, always wondered what it was but it goes away after cold start.

Welcome and congratulations on your new truck!

I listened to your video and I have a similar sound, maybe a some what lower frequency though; that is if I'm hearing what you're hearing. I tried to get you a video to compare, but it's so hot here the e-fans are full throttle even on cold start

I want to say it's alternator whine or more likely what @Sneezy mentioned. I thought about temporarily removing the accessory belt to see if I get a sound change, but never did. Instead I went and found my sales person and we walked their lot and started half a dozen 5.0's they have. Every one had a similar whine, sorta squeaking sound if you will.

As I'm sure you know, these things are difficult to figure out. I mean, if it bothers you enough, take it in and they will try to isolate the sound. And as you said, these trucks make all sorta of noises, even after you turn the key off :)

I just did it. It might be an alternator squeal like you said. It's sounds like a very soft procharger idle. When you gently and barely raise it above idle, you hear pick up speed with the rpms until the pitch is too high for us to hear. It doesn't sound like it's in the engine at all. It's not that noticable. I took a video, but it's the exact same sound.

When your ac is on, you can barely hear it, but it's there. That may explain why I've never heard it before my ac broke down a few days ago. I already lithium grease on the belts; no change.

And this is exactly why I choose to search/post here instead of going directly to the dealer about every weird sound on this truck! And I just prefer to DIY things in general if it's not a huge hassle. Though I got the extended warranty as well which is well worth it for the peace of mind.

Well I greatly appreciate everyone taking the time to check into it! It's a bit nerve wracking to hear your new truck squealing like an old beater! Though that's an exaggeration because, like you say, it's not very loud, and almost completely inaudible from inside the cab. So if it's normal then I definitely wont worry about it! It's not the most pleasant sound, but if it's somehow necessary to make this truck operate the way that it does, then fine by me.

Though if the sound is coming from the alternator, I wonder if upgrading to a high output alternator would reduce or eliminate the sound...

Well, it's two months later and this idle noise is annoying me much more than it should. I must have high sensitivity to the frequency of this noise because to me it's a loud high-pitched whistle that I can easily hear from about 50 ft away and I'm surprised that I can't find any other threads complaining about it.

Anyway, I've noticed that (as @KingDavid mentioned) giving the truck just the slightest bit of gas to raise the RPMs at idle will cause the noise to shift from the high-pitched whistle into the "straight-cut gear whirr" which I find considerably less annoying. So I'm thinking that a tuner might provide an easy fix to just raise the idle RPM (which for mine seems to be just a hair over 500 rpm currently). Or maybe there's an even easier fix like leaving a constant load plugged into one of the power outlets...

Add a SuperCharger to it and you won’t notice it anymore. You will be to busy grinning from ear to ear.
Close to 10k but a game changer no doubt. They always put you to it don’t they?. Are you all in? It’s 10,000 dollars and 300hp or be happy with your CAI that barely shows on the dyno…

Hi.... I just got home from an errand, 85* outside, truck is warm and idling in my garage.... is the rise and fall whining sound the transmission fluid pump? It sorta goes away when I increase the RPM, then reemerges again as the RPM falls back to idle again....

Thoughts?

Went to the dealer yesterday and a couple workers were watching my truck as I parked in front of them. They complimented the truck and asked if I had a procharger installed. I fkn WISH! ????

I can't blame them though, I installed my 20" Weld Laguna 6s a couple of days ago and slapped on the stock tires that come with the BAP 20s (275/65/20) so they look like slicks, I have longtubes and a Borla ATAK, and the transmission pump sounds like a procharger idling lmfao. I'm installing an IHC 3/5 kit I got with the rims next month or January. Btw, these are significantly lighter then the stock chrome 18s I had on there and make a tremendous difference. I never knew unsprung weight was THAT critical.

My 23 5.0 has the same whistle. It’s loud enough that my supercharged cts-v is jealous of her new garage mate ?
