OP- I finally found a video that sounds EXACTLY like my 21! It sounds horrible. dealer acknowledged the noise- hard to miss it. Ford customer care got involved and engineering felt it was my transmission. So last week I got a brand new transmission, torque converter, and cooler. Guess what? To my surprise it made zero difference. Nothing. Nada. It has to be something engine related. Once it warms a bit and idles down it’s silent. Runs crazy strong. But man is it embarrassing starting this truck next to my buddies GM and Rams. Cmon Ford- I’m at a crossroads of either throwing an exhaust on it or trading it. When I can hear that noise from across a parking lot on a remote start- it has me wondering If Ford overcomplicated the 5.0. My 2012 was quiet as is my sons 2011.
Did you ever figure out what was the cause of the engine noise at cold start?

2021 5.0.

I love the truck, plenty of power, super-smooth ride, etc. But it seems to make a lot of funny noises while idling. Is this normal for this engine? I know of the 2021 5.0 changes compared to previous model years. Seems like it makes a lot of strange noises during the first 2-3 minutes after cold start.

Here is a video. Doesn't really capture the noise super-well but you can hear a distinct change around 0:05s in the video - it's pretty loud in person. (need speaker with a bit of bass to pick it up - cannot hear it on my chromebook, but I can hear it on my phone). Video below:

The high Idle is an emissions test of the Cats.
The program does a number if adjustments to set up the test from cold start.
It's looking to test how much Ox the Cats store in a specified amount of time detected by the rear Ox Sensors and must pass the test or code can be set.
This requires higher Idle and mixture control that you hear in the exhaust and see as Idle speed changes while the Cylinder Head Temp rise.
This all takes time from a cold start and engine clearances are greater until the engine heats up, general engine noise changes plus hearing the High Pressure fuel pump clicking nose.
This test is even done on hot restarts still in effect even on hot restarts but a bit shorter in time.
Test can take as much as 3 minutes and Cold Idle can rise as much as to 1200 rpm.
Cats begin at Ambient, heat to 800*, rise to about 1200* and back down to the 800* range when test is complete in program specified amount of time.
This test started as far back as 2018.
Good luck.

Sounds like mine. Cold weather fuel injector tick will drive you nuts, but don't go chasing, it's a waste of time lol. There are so many things working under that hood , it's hard to decipher what's what.

In the grand scheme of things , it's a much smoother , better sounding engine than my 2016 was. Enjoy
