In looking for a new truck with larger payload, my current 2021 f150 has a payload of 1600lbs. I know this is dependent on features on the truck however, I saw a chart that indicated that some 21-23 have payload in excess of 3000 and 24's with 2300 payload. I'm looking to tow approximately 6000lb trailer with hitch weight of 594.

Opinions on f150's with larger payload. How's the gas mileage and handling. Or should I just move up to f250.

Thanks

The only way you're going to get anywhere near that payload will require you to get the most stripped model you can find. Super crews, sun roofs, and PowerBoosts are out. All options will add weight, which takes away payload.

Ford's current specs have an F-150 topping out at 2440#. Undoubtedly, as Dougpaw57 said, a 2WD, Reg cab, longbed. fleet-only stripper. Not sure why you'd need a 3000# payload to tow a 6000# trailer with a 600# tounge wgt?

I tow a 7500lb Travel Trailer with my 22 F150 Lariat with 1800lb payload and 940lb tongue weight just fine. Like others have said why are you needing such a high payload?

Getting f150KR
Mainly because it’s not the towing that maxes out it is the payload. I have a 24 f150 KR with a payload of 1316. When I towed my ranger 620 to canada (est about 6,000 lbs, 580 hitch - double axel trailer) with only me in the car and most of my gear in the boat, I was right at the max of the payload. I probably should have gone with a different model but didn’t ever think payload would be an issue.

You aren't the first to have to learn that the hard way and Ford doesn't make it easy to know, on an ordered truck.

I spent months of research here (looking at old builder's guides) and looking at stickers on the lots, to be able to confidently order my truck, with the highest possible creature comforts but also know that it would do what I needed. And even then, there was a bit of guesswork, that was only done, once a VIN was assigned.

The limiting factor on pickup trucks is the rear axle capacity, the leaf springs, and the tires. On my GM 2500 the truck had the same axle as the 1-ton version which had a load capacity of 11,000 lbs. The limitation was with the leaf springs with the 1-ton trucks have a second leaf pack and the tires that were rated at 2195 lbs each. I added Supersprings at the rear to gain 3400 lbs of load capacity and replaced the tires with Nitto ones rated at 3750 lbs for a total gain at the rear axle of roughly 3,100 lbs at the rear.

With weighing the truck with a 3700 lb load in the bed I learned that 80% of the load was being supported by the rear axle and springs and tires. That truck came from the factory with a hitch rated at 17,500 lbs. My F-150 with the max tow package had a factory hitch with a max load rating of only 11,600 for the truck that was supposed to be able to tow 14,000 lbs safely. One needs to consider the weakest link in the chain with a vehicle.

Like many have stated… for what you’re towing even a 1,400 payload (very well equipped truck) should be good. 1,400- 594 hitch - 200 lb driver (assuming your eating your veggies) = 606 lbs left for luggage and such ( you can also put in trailer to help)

also even the most stripped down f150 I doubt can get that type payload.

Have you actually measured the tongue weight on the boat trailer? A quick Google search shows the boat weight to be 2400lbs dry + about 2000 for the trailer you're probably looking at just under 5000lbs. Boats usually have shockingly low tongue weights. I've towed my parents Malibu 23XTi with my truck and my weigh-safe hitch. That boat is 3800lbs dry + trailer it's easily 6000lbs loaded. The tongue weight was less than 400lbs. Until you get into really big boats they're all pretty light on the tongue, yet for whatever reason still stable. My guess is it's because they put the axles where the majority of the weight is.

Meanwhile my 29ft 7500lb travel trailer has over 850lbs of tongue weight and depending on the weather it can be somewhat unnerving.

You are thinking of the HDPP package of the earlier trucks.
Available on XL, XLT300a
Specific front stabilizer
Specific wheels/tires. (18” painted aluminum)
Specific springs. (Max tow)
Specific rear axle (max tow)
I believe tires will be 275/65-18 on both two wheel and 4 wheel drive
As I understand, pretty rough riding truck as well.
5.0, 8’ bed are required—reg cab, extended cab

I don’t have the package on my truck, but the wheels were available as an option on the XLT 301a

nice looking wheel that I don’t care if the dogs pee on them

Look for a nicely packaged XL 101 or a lightly optioned XLT300 or 301

mine is a lightly optioned 301 SuperCab, 8’ 4x4, 36gal tank—-2008 payload

Rear lowered and decals removed
HDPP wheels
