I went to replace my tailgate after replacing the drivers side gate hinge today. It was supposed to be a tailgate with a step with tailgate release same thing i have. i have an earlier post because the new tailgate has the main harness and 2 small branches and mine has 3 branches so i was just going to swap the harnesses. I put it on and closed it not thinking figuring i could take the back off and manually release it. To my surprise it's all electric so now I'm in a world of you know what. I have the back off the tailgate but how do i get it to release and when i get it to release can i program my sync to show the power tailgate and hopefully get it to work. I have to believe because it was an option in 2021 most things should be there. i will also now need help with the harness because i can't switch them the new 1 is missing the grey connector. any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

So you replaced your non power tailgate with a power one? So now you added the Tailgate module that you did not have before? I cant tell what color the wires are on the plug your new harness does not have but the tailgate actuator connector is a 2 wire (grey orange & Black Violet). I would guess that the tailgate that has the power and module uses the module to release?

Thanks for the reply and diagrams. When i bought the tailgate it was suppose to be release only, i did get it to release by pulling the plastic piece on the relays. At this point i'm wondering if i should just gut it and put my stuff in it, the disadvantage is i wouldn't be able to sell mine. Unless there's away to program it with forscan and all the wires i need are there it's not worth it to me. Is there a module i need for the powered tailgate thats under the dash that i may or maynot have. Thanks

Can I piggyback on here?

I'm doing the same retrofit but it's '21 to '21. My old tailgate is an XLT with a manual latch. It has only two connectors on the tailgate hinge harness. I'm confident that one is the camera because it looks like shielded coax. It's the one with the beige clip in the pic on message #1 above. The other plug on the XLT appears to correspond to C4100 in post #4 above.

The replacement tailgate (with step) came off a '21 Lariat. I expected only remote release (as described on car-parts.com) but learned after installation it's a power tailgate. It has an extra plug corresponding to the black plug with red and black wires (I think?) in the picture from Markh's new tailgate above. Research tells me that black plug is a position sensor but the information source is AI, so it could be total BS. I don't think so, though.

My truck harness has a place for the extra black plug, but when I plug them in, it still doesn't work. Other than FORScan, is anything else required? Other hardware?

CoPilot says there's a Power Gate Module behind the C-pillar in trucks that have the power tailgate. My XLT wouldn't have it but should have a socket for the module. Is this true? If so, what is the part number and should the connector be there?

I appreciate any guidance you can offer. I'd like to get the electric latch and power tailgate working but can live without it. I bought the tailgate just to get the step.
