I’ve seen a lot on catch cans. They say they are good for the eco-boost engines. Does anybody have any thoughts on that?

A quick search for oil catch can will give you lots of results.

Are they needed well no but you may get a little more carbon on the valves and some oil in the intercooler. It wont hurt to have one. one of the only reasons I have not is I live in an area that is frozen for 4 to 5 months of the year and i dont want the can to freeze and blow out engine seals. Another issue i have heard is a check engine code it's in one of the few dozen catch can threads on here.

Ford put port fuel injection and direct injection on these engines (16 fuel injectors) so you dont really need it and like kieefer said use top tier fuel.

If they are needed or not is a personal opinion. I put one on my 22 3.5L and every 5k miles before I change the oil, I empty my catch can and both times since I've installed it, I get a good 1 to 2 ounces of oil in it. I'd rather have it than not.

It certainly is a debated topic.
A can will minimize the oil residue that enters the turbo charger, intercooler and throttle body. The intake manifold, plenum and valve will also appreciate being just a bit cleaner.
A worthwhile addition, Improved racing has a wonderful offering

UPR has a dual side system, best available, but it costs.

But I can't install it because of some kind of valve. Not a hybrid, just an ordinary ecoboost

No, this is incorrect. The dual fuel injection system just slightly delays it. The valves still get the buildup. It’s just later it becomes a problem at >150k, even with top-tier fuel

Would you install a catch can on a port fuel injected engine?

If the engine has a turbo charger, yes 100%
Any force induction engine will have a greater amount of blow by at some point later and it’s life. The addition of port injection greatly exasperates this valve deposit issue.

The Ford 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost engines with dual fuel injection (port + direct) fires almost all the time at light to moderate loads. The port injectors wash the valves constantly which results in almost no oil ever reaching the valves. Fords Ecoboost 2.7/3.5 and 5.0 Coyote (2018+) with dual fuel (port + direct) runs on the port fuel injection at 80–95 % of fueling except WOT. The only time the direct injectors fire is at high load or cold start enrichment, maybe 5–10 % of total operating time.

I believe Toyota was the first to use both port and direct injection together with their D4S system. It uses port fuel injection for cruise and part throttle situations and direct injection only under high load. This system uses port injectors at 95 plus % of operating time. Ford basically copied Toyota’s D4S system with their system.

Again, engines like the Ecoboost 2.7 and 3.5 and 5.0 liter engines with dual Injection systems (port + direct) don’t need catch cans because the port injectors spray fuel directly on the back of the intake valves 100% of the time you’re not at wide open throttle. That fuel wash keeps the valves clean the same way every pre-2008 engine stayed clean. Not much different here.

Bottom line, adding a catch can on an engine equipped with dual injection = waste of money. If you have blow by issues then adding a catch can at that point is again, a waste of money.
