Does anyone know of any potential engine problems resulting from cylinder deactivation? Top end or rod/bearing issues or even crank/cam misalignment by not having all cylinders working all the time?
I haven’t heard of anything but woils like to know your thoughts

Never saw an issue when I worked on the dealer side and never heard of one in person. Doesn't mean there isn't somebody out there with a problem but there's no reason to avoid a 5.0 because of it. The system does meaningfully reduce fuel consumption in steady state driving.

Nothing. Not noticeable, I haven’t had issues on my 2021. Love the 5.0 with 3.31.
Agreed. I know gm and dodge had their fair share of supposed issues tied to their designs but I haven't heard of ford issues. I honestly didn't even know mine had it until I put a Borla exhaust setup on. It was an annoyance tbh but again no widespread mechanical issues to my knowledge.

This isn't the GM 5.3.
which beat the diesels they threw in in that period . . .

Anyway, as I understand it, the problems with the Cadillac 4-6-8 wasn't the mechanics of the shutoff, but the electronics controlling it.

It was fairly straightforward to disable (mechanically), but you still had an emasculated small displacement big block (this was the late 69s 472, 500 in Eldorado, whoops! 425, yikes 368!).

But, yeah, it set this technology back by decades by poisoning the well.

Even the Northstar avoided using shutdown in regular use (but in heat crisis, would run on 4 at a time, blowing air through the other 4 for cooling. Specced to do 50 or 100 miles in the desert with no coolant this way, but I don't think it succeeded).

None at all! I am so glad I was proven wrong from my hesitancy back when this first was being discussed. The way I look at it is these trucks have been on the road since 2020 since the model year typically debuts the year before in actuality. So heading into over half a decade on the road, with no known issues that I've ever seen.

I got over 27 MPG hand calculated in my 2024 5.0 SuperCrew two-wheel drive XL with 3.31 gears last month. 1900 mi trip from NC to Mass and back through the mountain route of i-81.. You're not getting that without cylinder deactivation. I was able to keep the truck in 4 cylinder mode for so much of the trip due to steady, smart driving and reaped the benefits.

I'm a huge fan of the cylinder deactivation in these trucks when in the past I was probably one of the biggest critics you'd find. I feel the same way towards the digital dash. Heading into 6 years of digital dashes and you don't see widespread issues.

I had a 2016 with a 5.0 and a 3:31 that truck got wY better fuel economy than my eco-boosts.

No issues with my 2022 5.0. Don't even notice the cylinder deactivation.

never heard of issues with it, but the main reason i tuned my truck is to get rid of it, as you can hear it with an exhaust, and saw absolutely no difference on MPG

Quick question and hopefully not a dumb one.

How do you know when it’s running on 4? I haven’t noticed any indications.

My ‘25 has 13,000 miles now and I’ve been very happy with the mileage and power.

There is a very slight buzzy fluttery deep tone that comes from the exhaust as soon as it goes into for cylinder mode. I have a resonator delete with the stock muffler intact, so I hear it a tiny bit more than I did when I had the factory resonator in place on my factory muffler. I also feel a slight bump type sensation.

I drive with the fuel economy gauge always displayed, so between the slight change in the exhaust note paired with the gauge zooming all the way to 30 miles per gallon... That's how I know it goes into that mode.

Thanks, I’ll listen for it.
