The highest temperature ever recorded in kuwait was in July of 2016 and it was 129.2° F. You're only exaggerating it by about 40%. Totally helps your credibility.

California has been hotter than that, too.
Speaking of temps... I notice my (black) lariat is usually reporting around 3 degrees (Celsius) higher than ambient....

I learned something! Had my 25 Supercab 4x4 for about 3 months. 6,000+ miles with the first oil change at 5k. I have been running 87 which works great and I definitely don’t need more power if I’m not towing. I get 20.5 mpg average on my commute. It drops down to 19 mpg around town. I might run a few tanks of 93 octane to see if there is a noticeable difference. Gas is expensive here in Cali. What did I learn? I’ve always been agnostic about where I buy my gas, typically the local 7-11. Thanks to this thread I just did a little dive into Top Tier gas and it got my attention. Not done looking into it but my next tank will be from Chevron.

Your gas station has 93 in Cali?! Why the heck can't I get 93?!

Gas in California is about $4.75 per gallon for 87 octane right now. 93 octane is rare in California because of state regulations. There are two oil refineries in California that are about to close and if that happens expect $8 per gallon gasoline to follow. ?

Sorry, I tainted your results. I didn't read the title closely. I have a Powerboost and use 87.

Interesting video on 87 vs 93 vs E30 on a RCSB F-150 V8 truck.

I run 91 for both my 21' V8 and 23' Powerboost. I used to run 87 but I noticed a smoother driving experience running 91 and I also get better MPG. On the V8 it feels the same to me running 87 or 91, maybe a slight minor performance boost with 91 but could be placebo. On my powerboost however, I notice its way smoother driving and accelerating but its clunky when I fill with 87.

A big factor for me between choosing 87, 89, or 91 (octanes in AZ) is the price. Where I live, its only about a 50 cent difference but I utilize gas station rewards for 10-50 cents off per fill up and use a Citi Custom Cash credit card for 5% cash back for savings. Occasionally, i'll also use gas buddy to see if a nearby top-tier station is cheaper.

Price is the defining factor for me. If I still lived in California, I would fill up with 87 because the high gas price for premium doesn't justify the slight MPG and smoothness boost I feel. I will always fill up 91 when towing and on road trips.

I also want to note that I only fill up with top-tier gas, specifically Chevron and Shell unless unavailable and I add Techron every 3 months. I do notice a significant difference when filling up with non top-tier and have experienced engine knocking.

This is just my opinion and experience.

A couple of things I may clarify assuming you’re in a higher elevation. The naturally aspirated V8 is going to have a lower volumetric efficiency (VE) and take in less air so it will be more octane tolerant at higher elevations making the difference between 87 octane and 91 octane less significant as compared to when you’re at sea level. With a turbocharged motor, VE will be less affected by elevation plus the fact that it might already operate above 100% VE so it will be more sensitive to knock and pre ignition and respond more to 91-octane fuel. To combat this the computer will dial back ignition timing to protect the engine especially on hot days (Arizona is hot), especially when using 87-octane fuel. You may notice this more in terms of drivability and power.

Around my area which is central Massachusetts we are at around 500-feet above sea level to ~ 140-feet on average near Boston. We have 93-octane available here and it is on average $1.00 more per gallon vs 87-octane, or $3.00 vs $4.00 per gallon as of the writing of this post.

I use 87 all the time. I tow a car trailer and a boat on occasion. I only use the top tier gas. By the computer on the truck I usually average 22-23 mpg per tank.

With V8 I assume because this is a thread about the V8?

Just fueled up today and got 20.2 MPG average per the trip computer using 93-octane. I did one 100-mile round trip to Boston and got it up to 23 MPG and a few other shorter highway trips and I would guess they total another 75 miles and the rest of the mileage was from short trips and around town driving between 30 MPH and 45 MPH.
