Do you need a license for anything and everything you want to do in FDRS? For instance: I want to install and activate the illuminated keyless entry in my wife's 25 Explorer, so is the purchase of a license necessary to make this change?

Thanks

I recently installed the wireless stick-on keypad on my 24 F150, and I had to purchase a 2-day FDRS license ($50) to program the BCM to recognize it. Dealerships around me wanted at least $200 to install it. So, I spent the $50 and also did some module updates.

Thanks, yes the wireless stick on is a little different as I understand it, it requires the entry of the serial number correct? The illuminated wired does not require that from what I understand.

Contemplating buying the Mongoose. Have a scheduled appointment for the 25 Explorer next week. $300 for the install and programming. I am leaning to doing this so that there can never be a question from Ford about an issue caused by me since this vehicle is new. Yes I understand that they should/could only cause issue with related problems caused by my possible faulty install.

May have to just bite the bullet on this one. I made an offer on a Mongoose on eBay, listed for $500, made a $450 offer, the seller abruptly pulled the item and declined my offer. Cant seem to find any of the many returns to Amazon. My guess is that the manufacturer gets them back and in some way, re uses them.

Decisions, decisions!

Thanks

Gotcha, missed the part that you were installing the wired keypad. In reading some forums, folks have added wired keypads to their F150s, assuming the wiring exists in the door (I have an STX, and there is no wiring in the door for the keypad). Those folks have been able to activate the keypad using FORScan:

Anyways, good luck, you can't go wrong with your plan.

If you NEED FDRS, then yes you have to have a license. You can't even login without the license. If it can be done with Forscan, then you can skip the FDRS license. Where in TX are you? There are a lot of us here with a Mongoose available to loan.

Thanks, for some reason with the 25 Explorer, folks have not been successful in just using the Forscan changes. Dont know why, discussion and or responses to my questions are limited to non existent on the Explorer forums.

I have read where guys are successful easily on the F150's.

Thanks

If you are looking for a cheaper entry than the Mongoose - this popped up a month or so back. At least a couple of Lightning owners are using it and I now own one, but haven't used it yet. @Mike G has it and has done some testing, but don't know that it has been put through 100% of its paces. It had a better price back during the Big Spring Sale. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DFM25BZB?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

The TOPDON cable is a piece of crap. It bricks the IPMA. Don’t use. There’s a much more promising VCM3 clone @HammaMan has been testing if you want a Mongoose alternative.

The VCM3 clone will also soft brick the IPMA but can sideloaded with forscan. It performs every other function. The topdon cable bricks everything. Using forscan to load the IPMA files is very easy and takes just as long as the FDRS programming.
