The 295’s do look better, but I definitely prefer better MPG’s from the lighter, smaller 275’s.
Thanks for posting those.

How much of an improvement did you see in mpg after dropping ~10lbs per tire with the new setup?

2-3 mpg easily. Tough to say exactly since the weather has been warmer since I installed the Nittos.

I bought the Nitto Terra Grappler G3s about a 1.5 weeks go and replaced my stock Hankook Dynapro AT2 on my F150 Powerboost. I went with 275/65r20 SL which is very similar to the stock 275/60r20. I was averaging about 20.5-21 mpg on highway on stocks. That number has fallen to about 15-16mpg. I was expecting a little drop in mpg but not a 5mpg drop. I even stuck to SL load instead of anything LT or E rated load to keep my mpg similar. The weight of the tire is 45 lbs versus Hankook of 41 lbs.

The tires are absolutely amazing in rain by the way but this has overall been a disappointment and I'm not sure what to do. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Tires were bought from Discount Tire. Calculations are from what I see on my instrument cluster.

Also, I am having lots of vibration 70mph and up, dunno if thats contributing to it.

Mine vibrated too and had to be rebalanced. A rebalance cured the vibration.

I too got mine from Discount Tire and they were noisy until about 500-600 miles. They then settled down. I lost about 1.5 mpg over the stock Hankooks (also went 275/60/20 SL).

Same as parthery. Have about 1000 miles 275/65/20 SL. Had discount tire mount with valve steam dot and they needed almost no weight. My mileage varies greatly even more than it did before which is a lot due to the way a powerboost operates. On my short drive to work, I am between 15-18mpg. Depends on lights, traffic, and temps. when I was around 20 mpg before. But on longer smoother drives I have only lost 2 mpg. Around 20 down from around 22.
The powerboost is so sensitive to weather, engine temp, SOC at the start of the journey, etc. all of which I don’t really care. The tires are incredible.

Highway speed kills mpg and start stops especially with the larger size kills.

I also have a level and tremor skid plate so those don’t help either.

For what it's worth you might want to recalibrate your speedo (and odo) using Forscan.

Also - are you hand calculating or using the lie-o-meter? I had to go in and change my fuel bias in engineering mode after I added the new tires. It was off by a fair amount again.

Most retailers allow 30 days return/exchange if you aren’t satisfied.

You could always go with the Michelin LTX Defender. I’ve run those before and they are excellent, but more of a H/T than the Nittos.

Did you recently have a drop in temps that could also explain your MPG’s?

I did a lot of tire research. I wouldnt go with the Nitto due to wear concerens. Check out Bridgestone Duelers. Great tire. Costco has them on sale now. Grrrrreat tires !! Scott

I just had the Bridgestone Duelers installed by Costco (sale) Really great so far. 60K warranty. QUIET, great tread characteristics for off-road AND on. My MPG stayed the same as when I had the rather short lived Goodyear Wranglers. (36K - really shocking) Scott

Hi Parthery.. Thanks for the Forscan idea. However I need details.....

Also.. I am using the onboard MPG display to characterize my fuel efficiency presently (After the install of the Bridgestone Duelers )

Those Bridgestone Dueler AT Ascents do look pretty interesting. Hearing good things so far.

The Toyo Open Country AT3 EV are another one I'm keeping my eye on. They claim low rolling resistance; first I've seen in an AT tire. Plus, they have SL load in 275/70R18 & 275/65R20, and look sweet!

The onboard meter is optimistic. You probably need to go through the calibration process (2 or 3 tankfuls hand calculated with the dash display reset each time so you can figure out the “bias”).

Example - you fill up and reset. At the next fill up the display reads 20.0 mpg avg but when you calculate it by hand it’s actually 19.0 mpg.
Do this for a couple tankfuls and get an average displayed and the actual average. Divide actual over displayed to get a percentage and multiply by 1000. (Using my numbers 19/20=0.95 x 1000=950)

Once you have the calculation you can go into Engineering Mode in the truck by getting in, closing the doors, press and hold the OK button on the wheel for 5 seconds then - while still holding it down - start the truck. Watch the dash and after a few seconds it will show Engineering Mode. Use the up/down arrows to scroll to AFE BIAS and hit OK. Use the up/down buttons to adjust the bias to the number you calculated, then press OK to save it. Shut the truck off and restart to exit engineering mode.

Once you do this, your displayed should be pretty close to actual. Mine is usually within .1mpg of hand calculated.

You are going to see a drop in mpg on the vehicle computer with a 1" taller tire.

I seriously considered those tires, but there were very few real world reviews yet. The problem was that the only place that had my size in stock was Firestone. I didn't want to be stuck with only a Firestone/Bridgestone product if I decided to return them during the 30 day satisfaction period. Discount Tire carries quite a few brands that I like, so I went with the Nittos.

While I did not see a reduction in mpg, I did not see an increase after reducing weight by 14lbs in each corner over my old 285/65R20 LR E KO2s. Not impressed so far with the G3s.

I'm tossing around getting the Michelin Defenders in the same size despite them having a far less aggressive tread pattern

If you check out the Ih8mud forum, you will see plenty of trail use for the Defenders. They will do fine off road......as long as it is fairly dry.
