Can someone explain the purpose of E rated tires on a half ton?

They do make a D load, but no C that I've found
Item 28840692 34" on size chart at WILDPEAK A/T4W | Falken Tires is the C rated tire I have on Method 316. I am not unhappy with them but do wish they weren't so heavy. I kindof wonder if I could have gotten away with item 28840115 35" on my leveled MY23 PB. Its just a hair lighter, E rated, and gains a half inch clearance.

Yeah I avoided any of the Falken Wildpeaks. (AT3 or AT4) they are way too heavy. I went with the Goodyear Ultraterrain in 285/65/20

We bought E rated General grabber X3 for towing, for off road/ Forrest service roads.
We were able to lower the pressure for the 3500km of gravel roads in the North west territory as well as Alaska. This was for comfort and side wall protection from the shale.

Makes sense but keep in mind something that'd pop an SL has irreparably damaged the E so do be careful and inspect the tires post such driving.

Totally agree, but with our stock tires and all the hype for the Dempster hwy and carrying x2 spares, we didn’t have the room, the tyres worked out amazing.
Saying that we also have Grabber ATx in a C rate and never had a problem on our 2400lb loaded off road trailer on the same trip.
Now we run the ATx E rate now for towing with both the off road trailer and our 5th wheel, gives us piece of mind.

So, If I understand your statement correctly, the more PSI in the E rated tire, the smoother the ride? I have E rated tires on a Jeep Wrangler I use for farm use (why - I bought the used Jeep that way). Right now the PSI in the tires are around 30. I've heard to run them that low for a smoother ride but holy cow, I feel every rock on a dirt road. It's rough.
I run “E” tires on my 98 chev k1500 and have done so for years.
Inflated to 50 normally.
Less pressure gives the truck mushy ride.
More pressure and the truck rides like a tank.
I think even running over a cricket can be felt.
This particular pickup was ordered for ranch use and came with “E” tires new, according to sticker. Original owner used to pull a gooseneck stock trailer and feed trailers, and were not even in the least, gentle with it.
But, even with “E” tires at 50, rides as nice or nicer than the f150 on the hiway.

Why would you need E rated tires when the load capacity of SL rated tires are higher than the axle weight rating?

E.G. I have 275/60r20 Mickey T Baja Bosses STD. Each tire has a load capacity of 2679lb @ 44psi. My Rear GAWR is 3800lb. Doesn't that mean I have almost 1600 pounds of leftover capacity on my rear tires at full load?
They will improve handling while towing and are more puncture resistant.

Most of the heavy LRE tires are in the AT or MT category. A comparable LRE tire like the Michelin Defender LTX M/S2 shouldn't increase weight or NVH too much. If they are of similar size and tread pattern, they probably won't have a significant impact on fuel economy either.

I wouldn't really have an issue moving to a comfortable LRE highway all season tire like the Michelin Defender LTX M/S2.

Toyo AT3 LT275/65/20 (34") was the lightest E tire I could find at 55lbs in that size back 3 years ago. They have a handy guide for converting P metric load ratings to LT.

https://www.toyotires.com/media/pxcjubjs/application_of_load_inflation_tables_20200723.pdf

WARNING! Please note that size-for-size, LT-metric tires require higher air pressures to
carry equivalent loads of P-metric tires and that any failure to adjust air pressure to achieve the
vehicle’s load requirements will result in tire fatigue and eventual tire failure due to excessive
heat build-up. Due to the higher PSI requirements of LT-metric tires they may not be suitable for
replacing O.E. P-metric tires because of the ride harshness that results from higher PSI
requirements

I run LRE tires on everything now except my old Bronco. But if they made 35s in LRE instead of LRC (15s) I would buy them too.
