Hello. Has anyone had their trucks frame and underbody cleaned with dry ice? They’re a local company that uses it on mainly older cars that are going to be restored but was thinking of having my truck done. I’m the second owner of a 21 xlt 4x4 and either the first owner traveled gravel roads often or what but the underbody/ frame look like it’s rarely been cleaned I did take my pressure washer to a few places but it’s still awful. I have the typical rear axle rust.

The shop quoted me roughly $1000 to clean and rustproof /coat the frame

I have no experience personally but I've watched a lot of dry ice cleaning videos. It's pretty mesmerizing and very efficient and safe at cleaning. You'd be shocked at the night and day difference after it's done. No idea is the price is good. We don't really have to worry about undercoating / frame treating in South Texas.

Rust actually reduces future oxidation of the metal and removing it will only allow new rust (oxidation) to form. No benefit to the mechanical fitness of the vehicle. It only makes sense to remove the rust if planning on painting the metal afterwards to prevent future oxidation.

Yes I understand that. This company would undercoat the frame and axle to prevent/ slow the oxidation down.

Yea I live in Kentucky and they do salt/ brine the roads here often in the winter. Being the truck came from Michigan it’s probably seen some aggressive road treatments in the winters I’m just trying to get things cleaned and looking more aesthetically pleasing while also hopefully preserving the truck to have many more years of service. I bought the truck for my family and possibly one day it be my currently 6 year olds first vehicle.

If it happens post it on here.

I bought into the fluid film idea. Sprayed fluid film black on the rear axle and differential to see how it would hold up. Didn't do the full thing on purpose to see how it would do last fall. Stuff has held up great over an Indiana winter and spring rain still black and not rusty. Really dressed up appearances and should help get me the 10 years I want out of this truck.

Dry ice cleaning is a very aggressive type of cleaning. I wouldn’t be willing to be a guinea pig on such a new vehicle and potentially harm the anti corrosion native to the vehicle and all the wiring/rubber hoses. It may not hurt the vehicle, but I’d find a different way to do it. Or come back here and let us know how it turned out so others know in the future
