I've located a concrete pad I'm confident enough of, as having a uniform gradient long enough to take accurate measurements and if necessary, raise the ball height to manufacturer's specs.

I still don't like the idea of loosing the ability to lower the tailgate. Maybe a piece of weather stripping or foam, glued to the top of the hitch latch?

I don't need it to hold a lot of weight, just something to protect the paint and camera, so I can maintain ordinary access.

I did raise the ball one hole in the shank.

But if you doubt what I said about the uneven-ness of eyeballed flat pavement, next time its handy, measure all four corners of your trailer, from ground to frame and see what you come up with.

On about the best looking two slabs of concrete driveway a fella could ask for, I couldn't get four corners to agree. Had to keep going side to side and split the differences.

As for the tailgate, almost certainly lost a conflict free condition but I had some left over seal material from my tonneau install and stuck a piece to the offending portion of the hitch latch.

I was told by 2 dealer to level the trailer with the proper tongue weight. This is the best configuration for towing to distribute the weight to the truck properly and eliminate trailer sway. Don't worry about opening the tailgate. If that's your only concern, spend the money and get a ProPride hitch. Totally eliminates sway, very easy to set the weight distribution and you can still open your tailgate. It mat be pricey, but the pro's totally outweigh the cost! I speak from experience towing for over 40 years.

Measure to the top of the frame between the tires for true height. Add I inch for the truck to squat. That's the height of the top of the ball.
There are some great youtube vids for equalizer ans how to measure and adjust.
