Has anybody been successful installing the Power fold, Power extend Tow mirrors (ML3Z17696DA) on a XLT yet? Have a 302A with Tow mirrors and 360 cameras, but I'd like to add the power fold and extend to this truck. Looking at a few forums there are some members that have talked about the swap but no confirmation on what was involved or if it was ever successful. There are a few 502A guys have had the necessary wiring and connectors in the doors but haven't heard anything about the 302A.

I purchased the ML3Z-17696-DA Kit from Ford for my 2021 F-150 XLT. It came with both left/right mirrors, control bezel and installation instructions. I then ordered the wire harnesses; ML3Z-14631-GA ($193) and ML3Z-14630-CA ($160) from my home dealer. I had the dealer whom I purchased the mirrors install them as we were traveling at the time and could not wait for the dealer to determine the correct wire harness and order them so I had my home dealer order the harnesses. Back home I had my dealer attempt to install the harnesses; however there was a problem that the harnesses were not the right version, whatever that means. The dealer also said that there are four (4) different versions of the wire harnesses and even with the VIN number they could not determine which harnesses were correct. When I checked on several F150 websites all refer to the above harness part numbers. Now I am out the $300+ for the wiring harnesses as they are "non-returnable special order" and still have Mirrors that will not extend nor fold. Has anyone installed these mirrors using different wire harnesses than the ones identified above?

I'm in the process of changing my 2021 XLT from manual tow to power fold / power extend. I'm currently in the same situation; looking for the proper wiring harness numbers. A thought: however, would we need the above wire harnesses (part numbers as listed) but still need to change out the control units in each door to make it all work?

Another thought, do we need to find out the part numbers from a Lariat that already has these mirrors.

did you get the kit that comes with both mirrors and the extend switch and bezel (ML3Z17696DA)?
this is the window switch

extend switch

right door

door harness are expensive and on backorder but you can add the wires easily if you want
Any chance you can provide the 'right door' control unit link again? The one posted provides an error. The link for the left door works great. Thanks!

Perhaps important to understand that mirror power fold / power telescope functions are managed by network (LIN) commands involving the Driver Door Module (DDM) and Passenger Door Module (PDM). The Power fold / power telescope commands are initiated by the door panel switch but are routed through LIN circuits to the required door modules through appropriate LIN circuit harness wires.

This is very distinctly different from mirror tilt / yaw (mirror power view-angle controls) which are managed by simple 12VDC circuits and momentary contact door panel switches directly controlling the appropriate motors, not involving LIN circuits or door modules at all.

Not all trucks / trims have the door modules (DDM / PDM) installed as OE (it depends on features requiring those modules) and it's quite likely that even if you have DDM / PDM as OE they are not programmed for features that were not part of the OE build.

The point being, it is quite possible that your XLT does not have DDM / PDM at all (in which case a harness from added door panel switches to those non-existent modules would be useless) and/or it is possible that even if you have the DDM / PDM they would require reprogramming to operate the power fold / power telescope functions.

There's extensive discussion of these mirror system details, associated diagnostic codes, and wiring diagrams in the Ford Service Manual which can be accesses for $22 (72-hour subscription) at https://www.motorcraftservice.com/Purchase/ViewProduct (note that these manuals are Windows format interactive software, not simple PDF documents).

Study of that excellent resource reveals that the different mirror functions are much more complex and OE-feature dependent than one might expect. Of course the Workshop Manuals do not directly address what might be required to 'upgrade' from a non-OE configuration at all.

Also note that if you dig deep into all of the tabs / pages for each of the available TT mirror accessory kits I believe you'll find fine-print notes to the effect that the kits do not support functions which are not supported as OE by the vehicle on which they are installed. E.g. on this page we see the notes
  • These trailer tow replacement mirrors support the same level of functionality as the base mirror they replace
  • Some additional features found on factory installed Trailer Tow Mirrors (including clearance lamps) may not function
  • Not appropriate for vehicles with any of the following: manual adj., manual fold, manual telescope, no BLIS, no 360 camera, no memory
Not suggesting that adding non-OE functions / features isn't possible, just suggesting that the solution may be far from 'plug-and-play'.

Just FYI / for your consideration, Good Luck!

If you can get the Lariat part numbers for powered mirrors that is what I would suggest you order. I have tried several Lariat VIN number from my dealer but they were all manual mirrors so no help.

Just FYI. I went to CarFax.com and put in 2021 F150 Lariat for sale and there were several choices. I scrolled through until I found one with tow mirrors in the picture. Clicked on it and if you scroll down, you're able to view the window sticker. I found one built at Dearborn, where mine was, and check the overall truck. I was able to find a Lariat with the same engine, and most all the same options, as it turned out as mine, with power fold, extend tow mirrors. I've yet to go to my dealer but I hope to get there later this week to see what can be done.

This may help. Just no power extend option at this time:

A follow-up on my previous post to provide some additional info that might be of interest ...
  1. Attached PDF of two excerpts from the Workshop Manual about mirrors - Overview and System Description
  2. Attached Excel file of the As Built DDM and PDM module values for my Lariat with full-power Trailer Tow mirrors (compare to the DDM/PDM module tab in the FORScan spreadsheet)
Just FYI
