One more question came up while putting together my wishlist:

When custom ordering, is there a way to see the payload and towing capacity numbers before submitting the order?
Would be really nice to know before committing.

Thanks much!

Unfortunately, no.

There are some out of date build sheets, that give some weights, of some options. Until you see the yellow sticker, you won't know for sure. Or so it was when I ordered mine.

I looked at a bunch of trucks on the lots, took pics of their window and yellow stickers to try to get a feel, as well as reading others here, who went through the same thing and posted their findings.

If payload is particularly important, especially if you think you might be close, avoid heavy things. Moon roof, power tailgate, bigger wheels and tires, FX4 etc.

I should clarify. The tow guides will give towing capacity, based on cab selection, 2 vs. 4WD, engine, rear end, tow package or not, which one and box length. But they're for a stripped XL.

Maybe not quite worthless but payload, is where most bump their heads first.

You can use Autotrader to find trucks with a similar build to what you’re planning to order. You can then put their VINs into the Ford Payload Calculator (https://www.ford.com/support/towing-calculator) to get their payload rating.

You share what trim level(s) you are considering and what you will be towing.

Then folks could chime in with their configurations and payloads. That should give you a pretty good idea.

I went through this battle over the years and since I delayed my purchase until last weekend, I was able to reap the benefits of Ford streamlining of payloads for recent model years.

For reference I am about to pick up today, my new 2024 F-150 SuperCrew XL 2WD 5.0.

It has 1977 lb of beautiful payload lol.

My suggestion is to look at trucks online that match your specs, and then use Ford's towing calculator because it will show you the payload. I can tell you that a 2.7 truck has significantly lower payload than a 3.5 EcoBoost or 5.0.

But Ford streamlined payload and GVWRs, so the penalty of some of the higher options including four-wheel drive is lower than it used to be. For reference my brother's 2016 XLT 302A 5.0 4x4 has a payload of nearly 400lbs+ less than my new truck. However, you could get a newer version of his truck today and be close to the payload that my 2024 has which is an almost 2,000 lbs.

The towing calculator is an excellent resource and I highly recommend playing with different vins you find that match your specs to get an idea.

Thanks everybody, great forum. I am glad I joined!

I followed the advise here and built the truck of my dreams on Ford's website, and then searched local inventory, which gave me a few VINs to plug into the calculator.

I am looking at an XLT with the 3.5L powerboost/hybrid engine and a few extras. Using the towing calculator, I figure that I will be looking at 11,000 lbs of spec'ed towing capacity and a payload in the 1,500 - 1,550lbs range.

Towing is plenty (our trailer is ~5k lbs), but payload seems low compared to my current 2012 F-150 screw 6.5' bed, which has the HD payload package and shows 2,400lbs on the sticker.

But now that the kids are out of the house, I can probably live with 1,500lbs.

Thanks again guys!!
