When someone "orders" a truck, is there a purchase commitment? How much down is required? How do you shop around when ordering? Thanks

There is no purchase commitment, and you should have price protection from the date you order.

Usually its a $500 deposit to put in a factory order, but it was only $100 when I put in mine back in Feburary 2022, because they know people have to wait so long. Not sure if that's dealer specific or if that's still on-going.

You can always just eat the deposit and not buy the vehicle.

Deposit sprinkling is the way to buy a vehicle in todays environment. Put down refundable deposits all over town and keep the one you want. Dealers will gladly refund your deposit as they have a lineup of people that will take the vehicle if you don't want it.

Deposits can range from $100 to $1000

In my shopping experience I wanted a dealer that would do X plan plus have the volume and allocations to get me a vehicle in a timely manner.

Deposits vary by dealer. Have seen $0 down, $500, & $1000 for F-150s over the last year

Remember that as a retail-order consumer you are making an agreement with a Dealer, NOT Ford Corporation.

The terms of any 'commitment', deposit, deposit forfeiture, and even pass-through of price-protection (provided by Ford to the Dealer, NOT the retail-order end-consumer) are ALL between you and the Dealer, not you and Ford Corporation.

Dealers, not Ford Corporation, set the sales price and order / purchase terms for retail-order consumers.

Dealer practices and policies can vary widely in regard to all of this, there's more than a few 'really slimy' dealers out there, so CAVEAT EMPTOR.

well put.

Granger in Iowa (who does 3% below invoice) requires a $1000 non refundable deposit. With recent notice of no heated mirrors(since resolved) and no heated steering wheel(still a delete) they offered to allow cancel and receive deposit back if desired.

As indicated in my signature block I happen to be a Granger customer. Having concluded my 2022 F150 order-through-purchase with Granger I can say with confidence that they are the most honorable, straight-forward, and consumer-satisfaction-driven dealership I've encountered in my 50+ years of car-buying.

They (or any dealer) cannot control what Ford Corporate does, but Granger does their damnedest to treat the customer right in spite of Ford's failings.

IMO there may be others who strive to equal Granger's customer-friendly practices and policies, but IMO there's simply no way to exceed what they deliver in that regard. I've said before that I firmly believe Granger's success is based on total dedication to customer satisfaction from the ownership to the 'lowest' position in the organization; IMO that's the only way they can deliver what they do day-in and day-out as evidenced by the overwhelmingly positive customer reviews they receive on this and other forums.
