Just sharing FWIW ....

The fiberglass 5th-wheel RV pictured in my signature block below runs about 4500-5000# when traveling. I'm based near Austin, most of my camping has been in Texas in hilly but not mountainous terrain. My IPC is always configured to display digital engine & tranny temps plus relative boost, I don't use any device to monitor other PIDs.

Often towing at ambient of 90-100F+, no matter what settings I've used I've never seen any temperatures concerning to me.

I don't obsess about any of this, certainly don't obsess about mileage (I don't display any of the MPG readouts while driving, for me 'it is what it is', an accepted cost of using my vehicle the way I want).
  • My default when towing is tranny in normal mode; if I notice continued relative boost (headwind or long uphill grade) I'll manually lock-out one or more high gears to tame the boost.
  • Occasionally I'll run in Towing Mode for a while, just experimenting, but generally see no benefit and typically don't stick with it for very long.
IMO all depends on the load conditions, so I'll likely 'play' more with Towing Mode when I find myself in more mountainous terrain .... suspect it'll be a matter of taming temps more than boost per se in that situation.

Aside, I am of the school that favors wheel-brakes over engine-braking the majority of the time (the 'brakes are cheaper than tranny' school of thought). Again, that might change when encountering very long / steep down-grades in mountainous terrain I've not yet encountered.

Just my observations and practices to date, FYI, YMMV. :)
